Hello

Before I start, I did just read this sticky http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=190737 but still can't make head nor tail of what to do.

I just bought a Sony A33 - took a bunch of pics in raw and now cannot get any program to read them except Sony's own.

I have a SONY disc that came with the box which has a convertor software and a separate editing software... which of course, I can use, but it takes time to do all of that and isn't going to be available on every laptop or PC that I use

My photoviewer is picasa, all photos are catalogued in Picasa and I use Picasa Web Albums - Picasa wont read raw (just shows a browny dull raw shot) from the A33. However, Picasa has always read RAW from my Sony A200. I have just read up that Picasa doesn't support the A33 raw CR2 format yet (go figure)

I have spent ages (sheesh, it took over an hour to download) trying to work out how to get PSE9 to open a file - and I can't figure out so I am assuming now that PSE9 also doesn't support this RAW format.

Well, this would all be fine and dandy if I was using just one laptop - but I have three to work on in different places - I use my camera at work and need to be able to just download, edit and put on the school website...

how can I do this?

I am assuming this means I will need to shoot in RAW and jpeg in future or possibly just in jpeg?

What do I need to download to get PSE9 to read a RAW file... or do I have to make it a tiff and then convert it to a jpeg?

:bang:

All, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you referring the the SLT A 33? that should be compatable with elements 9.0 with the latest update, you shouldn't need the dng converter.

Thanks Dave - hmmm... it prolly would as it supports the A33 - but again, I would still have to convert the raw into another format (ie DNG) and this is the step I am trying to avoid ...

The sony disc has a converter which I've installed but even after converting it then has to be saved as either a tiff or jpg to be able to get it into Picasa - the editing software they provide is lightbox and you then save as a jpeg or tiff, but lightbox is just a basic editing too.

it just seems that with a new camera, unless I shoot jpeg, I am going to have to go thru this conversion process for every photo (and I take a lot, not just a few)

I just downloaded my A200 shots and they open straight up from RAW in PSE9, and in Picasa.

Hi Wayne... yep, A33SLT - downloaded PSE9 today (trial) - but it will not open up any of my files at all, unless I put them through the Image Data Converter that they provided on their disc.

If I open up the converter and click on the PSE9 button that appeared there when I added it as a program, it will take the file into PSE9 but immediately converts it to a jpeg

Photomatix 4 (point whatever it is) is quite happy to open up the RAW format... but not PSE9.

In PSE9 if you click on Help / About Plug-In and then select Camera Raw what version does it say you have?
It should be version 6.

As Wayne states, PSE9 will support your camera but its needs the latest updates. Its the ACR plugin that need updating to 6.3 http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4920.

If you can not update the trial software then the only way is to use the DNG converter. This is a simple batch program to covert all you files at once. Using DNG as a raw format may suit your need better if you are using multple machines and different editing programs. I think that Picasa supports DNG as well.
