Please Advise, Newbie with Money Burning a Hole in my Pocket...

Hey guys first post, Looking to buy a a good DSLR and ALL the gear to go with it. I know Im jumping in at the deep end, but Im the kind of person who would rather buy once than buy twice. Anyway, Im also looking for a good Wideangle and Zoom/Telephoto Lens so any advice on my current list would be extremely appreciated.


Nikon D200 with Kit Lens
Nikon 18-70mm F3.5-4.5 G AF-S DX Lens
+ UV Filter for Lens
+ Lens hood

Nikon 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 G AF-S VR IF-ED Lens
+ UV Filter
+ Lens Hood

Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens
+ UV Filter
+ Lens Hood

Manfrotto 701RC2 Fluid Head
Manfrotto 055MFV Carbon Fibre Tripod
Mantrotto Tripod Bag to Fit

Lowepro Vertex

2x Sandisk 4GB ExtremeIV 266x
Spare EN-EL3e Battery.

What else am I missing? Are these Lens good buys? Should I buy more batteries? Should I buy more Cards of Less Capacity?

Any advice welcome :help:

Oh and just incase it matters, Im going to intially be using this for some Aerial Photography but mainly for Pleasure and for 'Detailing' if any of you know what that is :)
 
What budget have you got?

We all love spending other peoples dosh.....:lol:
 
Joking aside...Welcome to the forums!

If you go the 'Dark' route the D200 is a very good camera, of which quite a few members have them around here.

Lens wise, I'm not to 'up' on Nikon stuff, but definately would go with the Sigma, I have one and they are great.

Tripod choice sounds OK, I have Manfrotto and swear by them for my needs.

You may find that you can get the extreme III's a lot cheaper and you won't notice any difference. Always a good idea to have many smaller cards then a couple of big ones, just incase they go belly up.

Regarding batteries, spare ones always help, you might consider a battery grip, I've got them on both my cameras and they are brilliant, double shooting power and addtional controls for portrait shooting.

Up to about £2k fracster, from what I've put together does from what I've got in mind comes in around 1900 atm.

I have considered a battery grip, but unfortunetly it pushes me over budget at the minute, but I think its a definate for the future,

Hi mate, missed you post above, Nps, Im not an experienced photographer unfortunetly. But as I said in my first post, Im the type of person that when I get into something I dont like to do it by half measures as I know once I get 'into it' I'll be kicking myself why didnt I just spend the extra and get...

But I am and always have been extremely interested in photography, and I now in a position where I can finally indulge my interest. I maybe be a DSLR newbie, but Im not an online/forum newbie so just like anyother forum, this one has had its fair share of wannabes and people 'talking' about getting things and having things that never really materialise. Well just to give you's an idea here's some shots we've paid to get done for us.

But as you can see, they aren't great like he gets his feet and the side of the helicopter in so many of the shots its unreal! [/rant]

So myself an quite a few friends all agree that with the right equipment I could do a much better job myself. So Im going to give it a blast and see how it goes. lol

Hi Gary, yes I think I remember Clarks write up on an Elise, he's not too bad a detailer either :lol:

Im hopefully about to start up my own detailing business in portugal (originally from N.Ireland) and with the need for some decent aerial photos as above for another project, its the perfect excuse to buy a decent camera for myself :)

Mines was the bright orange one "driven" under a fence at knockhill, he enjoyed working on the car and I enjoyed having him work on it, but boy is it expensive!!

I think you could do a better job :D And with that gear you've got a great headstart. I had the sigma, great lens. The 70-300 you've listed is supposed to be good, and the kit lens gets some good reviews. I'd consider some faster lenses, without a doubt the 50 1.8 is so cheap and so good you may as well throw that in.. with that much going out, do your shopping and save somewhere and use the savings to get it. Or my 28mm 2.8 for another faster option. ;D
 
I think you are already spot on with the battery, cards and tripod. Also consider a remote shutter release, only around £20

I agree about having a fast lens if you can. You could also consider only buying the Nikon 18-200mm VR lens as well as the Sigma 10-20mm instead of the kit lenses.

I appreciate for the aerial you need a long telephoto so you would lose 100mm with this set up, but you have some immediate quality bought here rather than 'kit' lenses.

Alternatively, if you keep your suggested kit lenses in your set up, consider buying the D300 instead of the D200. It is no more difficult to use, but has much better capability at higher ISO which will also be an advantage for faster shutter speeds for the kit lens. Unless you are buying a second hand D200, the price difference if you go to one place and negotiate a discount is only likely to be around £200-£250. A new D200 is around £720 as soon as it is used the price drops to below £550 so the price looks attractive at first!
