Yes
So here I am with my new laptop, a fine ASUS RT-N66U router FINALLY configured to work with ****in' Talk Talk, and enough storage to rip all my CDs to FLAC & stream around the house.

And I discover windows can't play FLAC files.............

Have found foobar2000, which works ok, anyone out there got a better player?

This is an interim until I get a DAC to link to my Denon mini system???

thanks

foobar2000 is great. It takes some time to set it up and get comfortable with it, but once you do, nothing comes close for ability to customise and flexibility.

Thanks guys, foobar is straightforward but seems pretty basic, am I missing something?

HRT microstreamer next on my list

The interface is relatively basic but it is powerful. You can snazz up the interface (I believe the HydrogenAudio fora hosts a lot of foobar2000 discussion, and you'll see plenty of examples there) but it isn't quite as dressed up as other media players.

What nonsense, of course you can play flac on Windows!

foobar is excellent. It handles single file flacs (i.e. the whole album ripped as a single file) which is more than most other ones do. Why do you need something more than "play"?

If you want to hide Windows, and have a wizzy media centre experience, try xbmc...

No, you're quite right, all I'm after at the moment is "play" foobar has all i need i reckon

Not by default without a codec installed.

Maybe it was part of some codec package I downloaded at some time in the past, but I can hear flac no bother at all ?

Ah, VLC is the answer!

VLC doesn't handle single file FLACs properly.... (important if you want live/"concept" albums to play gapless correctly for example).

The Devil is in the detail ;)

Ah, but me being old and deaf, have you heard the saying...........

....it just works

Hi Steve are you playing back the FLAC files just on your computer ? I output mine to a digital to analogue converter and as such you need to load in a plugin to let your PC output through a USB lead to the DAC thus letting it do the job it was made for.
This is done for quality of sound reasons, otherwise don't bother

Dave

I'm hoping to get a dac soon to link to the mini system and hopefully to proper separates in the next year or so, thanks for the heads up
