Not wishing to add to your dilemma but have you considered the Kindle HDX? Just got one for my boy this Christmas, as an alternative to the iPad mini, and am seriously impressed with it.

Paul. Look at the battery life, I have a lenovo yoga 10 and with about 18hrs battery life it's good but don't buy a yoga 10.

Can't comment on the above tablets but would say this about my Lenovo experience. We've got a few of the Lenovo S6000 tablets and they are good out of the box, quick enough, nice screen etc. but the support from Lenovo in terms of updates is virtually none existent. It seems to be that some of their tablets will get the odd upgrade to the OS and some are basically the out of box platform and nothing more.

Picked up a couple of these for my middle two kids this Christmas and all is well (y)

Interesting, but why not buy the Yoga 10?

Reason being is when I went to insert a SD card it didn't want to find the seating place in the slot, the spring, so I looked on the web and found that they have a build error with this, there is also a video on YouTube that shows a man opening a yoga to find his lost card. I'm in the process of contacting lenovo ATM to see what they plan to do as I would like to use a SD card. Other than that it's a really nice smooth tablet and looks great too.

Interesting, I didn't have that problem - although inserting and removing the SD card isn't as easy as it could be - but I did get messages to say the card had "unexpectedly been removed" when it actually hadn't. I had bought a cheapo card but a change to a branded make has fixed that issue and I don't have any other issues with the tablet.

Having said that, I do find that when viewing pictures on some web forums - this one included - they appear slightly out of focus. If I click on them and go to either the gallery or Flickr (etc) site they're hosted on the images appear perfectly sharp. It's a minor irritation - have you noticed anything similar?

Yes I find the same with photos, strange.

Strange indeed - one of life's little mysteries I guess :)

Happy New Year everyone :D

It just demonstrates that there is a difference and you get what you pay for...

Well, the Asus I bought was changed today.

When I switched on it this afternoon, a prompt on the screen said due to policy changes with Facebook (and Asus) all contacts photographs, and all of the photographs uploaded and displayed in Facebook, would now be shown only in Low Resolution.

Of course, I checked straight away and right enough - the photos on Facebook had turned into what is best described as looking like your computer had had it's graphics card turned to the lowest setting! All blotchy and lumpy, especially on edges of different colours & contrast areas, and text in images, and they all looked "soft and fuzzy, kind of out of focus like".

Naturally enough, I rang Argos, who despite the returns policy on tablets being no returns, they agreed that whilst not a fault, it was unacceptable, and they refunded my money.

I have now bought a Lenovo S8, which whilst smaller than the original 10 inch Transformer, looks miles better, and responds very well. It's only downside is the battery is not the longest lasting.

Paul.

Looks OK Paul, hope it does all you require.

Yes, hope so too Graham.

The screen is very good, better than the Asus. Speed is perfectly quick enough. A max of 8 hours battery is the worst bit - and the usage indicates 80% of it is the screen!

Paul.
Ah well, I'll stick with my 18 hrs of battery on my lenovo tablet :D

Well, this thread has been very interesting for me as I was out today looking at tablets. A bit of a nightmare to be honest - I'm doing loads of research but it feels like a minefield.

Initially I was interested in the Lenovo Yoga 2 10" but I have been reading extremely mixed reviews which is putting me right off. I was interested in this one because of the good screen resolution, handy stand, attractive looks, and the long battery life. I've also been looking at this which seems very well specified (please comment if any of you have one): http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/comput...pro-10-1-tablet-16-gb-white-22083972-pdt.html

I like the sound of the Tesco Hudl but it's a little bit small for my eyes and the battery capacity seems quite low (but other than that it looks fantastic).

It's so difficult when you have a budget - you can find a tablet which seems to meet your needs only to reveal a deficiency in another area. Paul, I hope your tablet is still proving satisfactory. Reliability is key for me because I need to be able to take away when I do workshops and run my slides off it.

I have an iPad 3. I bought an iPad Mini 2 to use as FPV for my DJI Inspire 1. It's a beauty! Love the size and I've stopped using the iPad.

Thanks for the reply Ricardo, I'm not considering any of the Apple products because for the size of screen I want, and the storage capacity I need, the price is way beyond my budget. With the android devices I'm considering I can expand the capacity via micro SD.

I now own a Sony Xperia Z3 compact and cannot fault it, takes a 128 Gb micro sd card, has a full HD screen with all my photos viewable over onedrive /Dropbox, you name it.

I think no matter what you choose there will always be a weak point or something you don't like. It might be price, battery life etc. I think you just have to do the best you can with the information and advice you have. At the moment I have the Hudl 2 and its great... One thing that does annoy me about it is the stupid full volume jingle it plays on start-up. I have to start it downstairs if I want to read it in bed and my wife is asleep

Unless the screen size is an issue, I would recomend a Nexus 7, I am still using the first version and it still serves me well.
The two things I like about Google Nexus devices are they a) don't install a load of useless bloatware applications and b) there is a very good chance that they will release the next version of Android for them (I've had mine since around Dec 2012 and Google have stated that they will release lollipop for it as well)

Yeah the nexus is an excellent tablet with good reviews (my daughter has one) As for updates I am waiting for my update that we were supposed to get on the Moto G a while back

This is really helpful - John, the start-up jingle would probably drive me mad at times, and that kind of information is very useful as I am often in quiet environments.

The Nexus devices look great, but yes it is the screen size which would rule it out for me.

Really good to learn the various quirks of these tablets.

Just to mention that micro dream have reconditioned Ipad2s at a very reasonable price... I've bought varuous other tech from then (laptop, desktop etc) and its always been good quality.

That aside I'd put another vote for the Hudl2 - to which I've just upgraded from my Hudl1. If you have clubcard vouchers you can get it for a very good price.

I have to say I prefer the Hudl2 to the iPads - hopefully Tesco will bring out a 10 inch version, that would be fantastic.

Tescos product managers are now shaking their heads and saying "women , never bloody happy give them 7 inches they want 8, so we gave them 8.5 and now they want 10" ;)

As they say - size isnt everything and in application I can say that I'm quite happy with my 8 and half inches :exit:
