Planispheres

I want to try to learn about where things are in the sky in depth and am thinking that a planisphere will start me off. Has anyone got any thoughts as to the best one to buy, or alternatives that will do the job better?

Stellarium

You won't need much else. Far more fun than an old fashioned planisphere too.

To expand on David's reply, I presume he means an/the Android/iPhone app "stellarium". Sky Map is another one. It uses location services and when you hold your phone upto the sky it acts like a "window" with stars and planets etc labelled with names.

Btw, this is possibly an OOF subject rather than TalkPhot
 
Sky Safari is pretty much unbeatable on the app front, but it's quite costly and has a bewildering array of features if you're just starting out.
I'm sure there's a slimmed down free or cheap version, though.

my thoughts also, tbh... or possibly landscapes (seeing as there's a Night and Astrophotography Photo section in there).
 
Keith/Mark, you are not kidding when you say it's an OOF subject. I had two windows open when I wrote this, the other one was an astronomy forum, so you can guess what happened!

However, everybody, I thank you for your replies and I shall try the software recommended.
 
have an ipad / iphone or tablet? Millions of things on the app stores and just hold it up in the right direction and all will come to life on the screen.
