Heathrow Airport has told airlines to stop selling summer tickets as it imposed a cap on passenger numbers - a move expected to lead to more flight cancellations.
The new limit of 100,000 daily passengers - which amounts to a cut of 4,000 passengers a day - will be in place from Tuesday until 11 September, the airport said.

Is this to do with staff shortages? If it is I suppose it's sort of understandable.

It looks like they've realised they're in a hole and have made the sensible decision to stop digging.

At least they'll stand a better chance of getting the reduced number of flights away on time...

This would suggest it is, I guess they laid off a lot of staff due to covid, and now everyone and their mum wants to get away,
they can't cope

Heathrow chief executive John Holland-Kaye said in the past few weeks, passenger numbers have regularly exceeded 100,000, leading to "periods when service drops to a level that is not acceptable".

I've heard that airlines, baggage handling services and airports all laid off huge numbers of staff because of covid and didn't rehire in time for the necessary security checks (which apparently take 3 months) to be done in time for high season.

Oh crap that’s not good so glad we went away last November
I wouldn’t book anything at the moment until it’s all sorted

We had absolutely NO (abnormal) problems flying EXT to HER and back last month. Small airport this end and Heraklion has always been ... interesting! When we came back, there were more staff on duty at midnight than there have been in the past at Bristol during normal working hours. They were also polite and as human as officials are allowed to be!

Definitely not so at Edinburgh, seems only two baggage handlers on duty overnight* so aircraft unloading very slow and soon backed up, recruitment very slow and applicants scarce.

* Told to me whilst waiting for luggage earlier this week, I did suggest some of the staff standing about in Jet2 uniforms maybe should help out resulted in me being accused of abusive conversation, silly bint.

It's not just UK, Dublin airport is a complete mess atm too, it's like a human zoo! - I knew there were issues before we headed away earlier this month, but upon return we saw mounds of un-claimed luggage in the collection area - our flight was delayed twice within a couple of hours, and then right at end they also changed the Gate No. - you really have to be on your toes when travelling abroad atm

You should have seen the pictures when they shut Luton airport due to the runway melting, on Monday.
Well they said it developed a fault, but we all know what that meant :D
They were all crammed in the lounge(s) hardly a fag paper width between them .

Can only imagine, the morning we left from our house [an hour from Dublin], took 12hrs before we reached Portugal, and we have a girl with a disabilty in our group - would have been a lot tougher otherwise as we had assistance both ends
