Places to live in Glasgow (For a post-grad)

If it were me I'd try and get a flat share as close to Byres Road as possible and just cycle into the city to the University. It's about three miles and takes 15 minutes according to Google so even if you double that time it's still not exactly a big commute.

Byres Road has plenty of bars and there are couple of clubs around also, the main place of activity being Ashton Lane but there are many other places nearby. Full of students (Glasgow Uni is right there) and some eccentric types and hardly any neds (chavs), it's a very safe area, probably one of the safest where there's a nightlife also and lots of nice girls who aren't chavy. Plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants etc and even a cinema. There's also an underground station so on a horrible day you can jump on the tube and get off at St Enoch's and walk up to the uni. If you want to go to the bars or clubs in the city centre then there's plenty of buses which will take about 10 mins. There's also a huge taxi rank on Byres Road and easy to grab a cab. There's a supermarket at the top of it and the Botanic Gardens which is great to chill out and have a beer during summer and there's various events there also (Bard in the Botanics etc)

To the south of Byres Road you have Partick and you'll come across the odd ned and jakey but nothing to worry about. It's an upcoming area and plenty of decent wee places to visit there also (cafes, pubs etc). Walking towards the city you have the Transport Museum, the Tall Ship, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and some nice parks plus more nightlife along Argyle Street (before it hits the city)

It's definitely sacrificing any commuting costs and spending that bit extra to stay in a nicer and safer area. If money is tight I would prefer to be able to go out at night without having to worry about how to get there and more importantly how to get home at 2-3am! On and around Byres Road it's all on your doorstep. It will probably cost a little more than other places but then you won't have commuting and late night taxi costs. I'd also recommend sharing with one or two others, it's cheaper, more sociable and will help build a friends network quicker.
Good advice, never thought about Byres road in relation to Strathclyde uni

west end at the uni is a dump too and way over priced. I'd have hated to have lived there during my university years

Well you can't get better confirmation that an area is good than poah claiming it's not.

How about you suggest some areas rather than just criticise other people's suggestions?

can't, glasgow is a dump ;)

west end is fine if you don't mind the noise, the poncyness, the cost and the chavs.
maryhill is full of chavs
dennistoun is either really scumy or trying to hard and will cost you
ibrox/govan are not particularly nice (but has local underground)
cessnock isn't as bad as ibrox/govan (but has local underground)
queens park/govenhill are not ideal IMO as while they have good transport links its not nice to travel in and out everyday. plus they arn't the nicest of areas either or you get charged too much.

if I was doing a PG degree at strathcyde I'd want to be as close as possible without having to spend on public transport. just out of the city centre maybe at the bottom of great western road or woodlands wouldn't be bad but the sad thing is the housing just outside the city centre has no real middle ground between crap and expensive. This is just my opinion from living/studying.working in Glasgow for 38 years.

Woodlands is nice enough but I've no idea about prices. Park area is expensive though and there is potentially a lot of construction work going to happen there soon. You are borderline West end there anyway.

West End but a bit further out is Anniesland. It is cheap, an easy commute into the City Centre for Uni (train takes 14 minutes) and it is an excellent location to be able to go out into the country side at the weekends.

Thanks everybody who helped me out in finding a place to live in Glasgow. In the end after really thinking everything through, mostly just for the ease, I ended up going with what the university offered and I've just moved into my new flat In Andrew Ure Hall (off "High Street", just a bit further down from High Street Station).

Its nice enough as they've just refurbished the flat (and very well), it's only about 5-10 minutes off the Strathclyde campus and the other 5 guys seem like good enough people, so I'm hoping to enjoy the next year and am really looking forward to starting my MRes in a few days.

Thanks again everyone for your suggestions, advice etc.

Sam.
