weekly pjm1's 52 in 2015... 8 (Relax) added

No crit from me.

Its a great photo.

Must admit i am liking your work.. :) looking forward to seeing more.

Hi Darren, that's very kind of you! This project is all about learning for me, so everyone's comments are always welcome :)

Love the reflections and the colour - the mist towards the horizon blends the sea into the sky nicely and the tanker in the distance adds a tiny little oasis of life (human - life, that is) - I can almost hear a fog-horn!

Cheers Karl - honk!

Hi Paul, thats a huge change from the SooC image and what can I say the PP is superb, the blues are stunning it all just blends into one brilliant image, ship on the horizon is a nice touch too

did I mention how much I liked that

Hi Allan, thanks for dropping in - good to see you! Yes, I did a bit of PP there  :$ but most of it was necessary because I had to make so many compromises/adjustments in camera to get a useable image. Glad you like it though :)

This is quite an eerie shot or perhaps I have an over-active imagination.

If you go to the flickr image and enlarge it then squint while looking at the picture you will see a head and eyes looking up from underneath the water where thelight spot is in the middle -- creepy. I love the image overall but I can't unsee the face in the middle now.:)

Hi Martin... well thanks for that... now I'm not so sure about using it as my screensaver as I don't want an underwater head staring back at me!! :p

I was also wondering about the sunrays poking in from the top - I deliberately left them in, but the more I looked at it, the more I wondered if I should crop/erase out?
Personally I feel that if you crop or clone them out you are left with a white "blob" on the water.
IMO it shows what is being reflected and definitely adds to the image.

Hi Paul,

I think your processing of your elegant shot is very well done. I agree about moving the chair on the RHS.
I like the swan shot, and Loch Lomond is obviously beautiful, but for this a reduced DOF would have made the swan stand out better with the beautiful background blurred behind.

Your watery shot is simply stunning in it's simplicity. It's the kind of shot that would be calming in a hospital waiting room!

Hi Marsha, thanks for the comments - yes, need a tweak to the photo-on-wall shot, I agree. Thanks for the suggestion re: Loch Lomond swan - that's a really good idea. I love shallow DOF but for some reason never thought about it here!

Thanks for the very kind comment on Watery... glad you like it and perhaps I should get it uploaded onto a stock site!

Elegant - although the swan should be more elegant, I am drawn to your first version. As others have said maybe lose the chairs but your picture of your daughter is lovely, made even more special as you developed and printed it yourself - it is where it belongs.......... up on your wall!

Watery - just love the many tones of blue, so simple but SO effective, brilliant!

Hi Hazel, thanks for the very kind comments on both - really appreciate it :)

Watery; a very simple and minimalistic shot. Nice colour too. It reminds me of an album cover but can't think of which one?

Hi Stan... Nirvana? Thanks for the comments - it seems minimalist is the way to go sometimes :)

Watery - just simply beautiful I love it nothing more needs to be said.

Hiya Mandy thanks for dropping by - glad you like it and thank you again for another kind comment!!

Thanks Chris... that's what I love about this critique stuff - we get the benefit of everyone's views and wisdom. As you can probably tell, I do more or less know which end of the camera to point at stuff, but my composition and "image making" is still very much in development (excuse the pun ;))... which is why advice and suggestions are always so welcome and hugely helpful.

And best of all, it all makes me want to get the camera out more!

(But I do need to get around to everyone's thread tonight... so had better get on!)

Fragile - Love this shot. I think the whole thing is great. Excellent use of depth of field and props! I wonder what it would look like with a little orange juice in the glass? I don’t really have any criticism to pass on this image because I don’t think there’s anything I would add or change.

Scenic – One of my favourite things to do is to be out in the mountains, so as you would expect, I love this shot! Where were you? Adding your friend into the scene adds a sense of scale to the mountains and conveys the journey in getting there. I think shooting from a slightly higher vantage point might and further away would have created more of an isolated look.

I really like image 4 on the film strip, any chance of a full size image? Looks a bit like Beinn Dorain? I’d love to see the film strips too when they have been processed.

Hiya Steve... thanks for commenting. Glad you like them! I'm not at my home/office computer (just on the laptop) so all my LR catalogue is back there... I'll upload the #4 shot when I get back. The two hills we climbed were Cruach Ardrain and Beinn Tulaichean (I think - slight confusion because we had a last minute change of plan because of a snow blocked road!) Will post more later this week!

Cheers Mike.

Right, for my reference I'm about 90% caught up with everyone's threads - not quite done, up to https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/t...re-but-no-comments.569924/page-9#post-6688510 (this is just for my reference and I'll delete it when I come back later in the week!)

Companions - I have to admit I’m not as keen on this one as some of you others (sorry) but I see what you were trying to achieve. I do feel that the strength in this one is the tight crop though. It works better than the SOOC version. Converting it to mono has also helped

Elegant - Maybe because we know and have seen the image on the wall but I do like this one. The use of the flowers help draw the eye up from the table to the picture. Not sure about the inclusion of the chairs though.

Watery - I do like this. It has a really eerie feeling to it. One of isolation. It could almost be a film poster or one of those arty prints in a modern up market apartment. The blues are great as is the Sun’s reflection in the water. Also the positioning of the Sun just off frame is spot on. Nice one Paul.

Hi Peter, thanks for taking the time to comment as always.

Yes - not a success this one, but sometimes you have to make mistakes to progress! Thanks for the feedback.

Again, not quite right this one, but getting better! Eventually I will be able to self-crit sufficiently that I can recompose etc. to get it right... one step at a time :)

Cheers - this was was a bigger hit than I expected... less is more and all that, I guess!

Watery works for me Paul. You had to cope with a very wide dynamic range and coped with it well. Good work

Lovely picture for Elegant, daughters certainly make a picture

Watery - plain, simple and to the point, good shot

HI Paul

Companions....SOOC version for me all the way , the colors really pop, there's a sense of them being together and alone in a wide open space.........I kinda get where you were coming from with the cropped version but unfortunately it doesn't grab me...sorry :crying:

Elegant....like it , very classy , simple layout, lovely soft lighting & great to see the photo of you little'un framed & on the wall

Watery...very peaceful & calming 'lovely starbursts form the sun bouncing off the water  Only minor point....I'd have been tempted to clone out the ship in the distance

Sorry Winding back to Elegant Paul!
First congratulations on your developing skills its nice to see in this day an age that people are still enjoying the "Magic" of developing their own work and that rat race hasn't crucified everyone with a time impediment!

Elegant 1 Apart from the framed picture which I think is absolutely gorgeous there is a great deal about this I like. Obviously the focal point was the framed photo as with the DOF of f4 the roses are OOF which is intentional, I like the printed picture on the table looks like a sort of surreal reflection of the one on the wall through 90 degrees. I like the burst of colour in those roses the green and the pinks work so well. Its such a clean cut shot and I love the lighting. The only thing I'm not sure about is the chair on the left. Nice to see the SOOC shots I must say!
Really lovely work....

Elegant 2 (the sequel) I like the diagonal that funnels you down into the shot and the setting sun. Nice pin sharp image of the Swan, obviously a young one by its feathers, and it doesn't look too worried about your presence or the Ducks! Watch out for is parents behind you moment! Think I might have stepped or turned a quarter to the left and picked up the whole of that Loch bound tree and lost the half boat (Landing stage?) on the top right.
OK it hasn't got the punch but its a good shot, As far as punch is concerned, its a balance between the right light in the shot and getting the PP spot on, or ending up with a quasi-HDR image isn't it. If that sky had been working with you, you would have had a stunner!

Trying to think which fits the theme better.... Probably the Swan if we weren't Swanned out:), But the other has the punch(y)

Watery.... I see you were starting to bank left in the SOOC;) Really like those rays dead centre and pools of light, and the starbursts in the sea are magic. Also the gradient in the sea is nice with some lovely subtle shades running up to the misty (now straight) horizon. I think the ship gives it a good perspective and emphasises the open sea. There is some noise showing through in the immediate foreground (darks) which is from the little lift you gave it;) Didn't go for exposure blending then:eek: Certainly a watery shot.
Really like this almost has a spectral feel about it... Nice work Paul!

All have the thumbs up from me(y)

Lovely watery image. Really like the colours, layers and the starburst effect.

Bloomin' heck - thank you all so much for the compliments :) And don't worry Lynne about Companions - it was one of those experiments which didn't quite work!

Hiya Steve - thank you for the huge and detailed commentary/crit. Really appreciated. You've been very kind with your comments (perhaps too nice on some!) but I do appreciate it and I look forward to seeing more of yours and commenting on them!

Meanwhile, here is a really quick placeholder for Bold.

It's not going to be my final shot, but I took the picture tonight and it made me laugh so I thought I'd share it.

The link to the them is the Irish meaning of "Bold"... i.e. naughty. And yes, she is a bit naughty.

07: Placeholder for Bold
by pjm1 (Paul), on Flickr

I have an idea for my Bold shot but I just thought I'd squeeze this in quickly. Couldn't decide on a mono conversion or the full colour so did a diptych! Very little mucking around in LR with this (apart from the mono conversion and adding of text in PS) so no point in posting the SOOC, especially since it's just a placeholder until I shoot my "proper" shot :) Also not adding it into the main thread for that reason... it's basically just a bit of fun!

Ha Ha Ha brilliant! This really made me chuckle! .... And I have just given my grand children back to my son but has to be said in a little bit of a cleaner state than your little cherub!!
It's a classic tell me are you going to put on the wall next to the B&W print :)
I'll generate that list soon and pm it to you.
Thanks for the chuckle before I retire;)

Talk soon.
Steve

Thanks Steve - it was a bit of a laugh really... not meant to be taken seriously as a submission!

Here is the proper picture for this week's theme. It's my son being a bit bold and seeing how hot a candle is as you get closer to it (obviously under supervision and apart from nearly kicking it over, no danger present!)

Illuminated with a single off camera flash, left of frame with a lampshade diffuser (but not gridded) to help soften the light a bit. It's intended to look sort of like illumination from the candle flame although that's given away because the candle itself has also been lit by the flash! I then chose a cloudy/shade sort of WB to give it an orange glow. A slight crop in from the picture as shot and some shadow dodging with a brush. An increase of contrast and clarity to make it look more like a harder light source (I guess kind of ironic given my choice of a diffuser to help soften... but this has the advantage of making the light more flattering to begin with).

07: Bold
by pjm1 (Paul), on Flickr

Self crit: it does perhaps look a touch staged? I only shot a single take so perhaps would have done better to do a few more and take the best but hey ho. I also think his clothese are a bit distracting - something plainer might have worked better. I didn't want eye contact but maybe a cheeky look of "should I?" would have worked better? I'm quite pleased with the lighting which has worked more or less as I wanted. I chose the DOF to have some slight differential focus between the eyes and the hands but perhaps a smaller aperture would have worked better to have everything razor sharp?

The idea of this shot actually came about when critiquing another poster's lower key shot and I decided to see if a low key shot of children could work. I'll let the jury decide!

Here is the SOOC shot for comparison: http://i.imgur.com/qWQQMdp.jpg

Cheers for looking.

Hi Paul, my word you are a health and safety nightmare  I have no crit to offer as you seem to have done that yourself, so does it work to answer your questions, DoF is spot on for me and yes low key for children does work.

Sorry can't offer anything else, I am sure other opinions will be along soon with more of a technical view

love the picture of your daughter, especially the B+W conversion (y) thank god mine have grown up and they can wash their own sticky hands and faces

Nice bold colours there which is what i first saw. Then i realised the concept behind the shot. You've self crib well regarding expression as I too feel this would have given the shot more of an edge. Will be interesting to see what the experts on here have to say.:)

Well, I'm certainly no expert, both your bold submissions suit the theme well. One mischievous, one courageous (?). Some kids know no fear!
The lighting in the last image is lovely.

Thanks Allan... the first one of my daughter was just a bit silly and good for a laugh (I think I also prefer the B&W conversion) but the second was a bit more of an experimentation and I'm glad it's worked reasonably well. Cheers for looking & commenting :)

Hi Mandy... yes, I agree it's lacking a bit of "oomph" but a worthwhile experiment in terms of lighting.

Well, I'm certainly no expert, both your bold submissions suit the theme well. One mischievous, one courageous (?). Some kids know no fear!
The lighting in the last image is lovely.

Thanks for the comments Ruth - glad you like the lighting... it was pretty much as I was hoping for, so quite pleased with the outcome on that one. Picture not perfect by any stretch, but I feel I'm learning new stuff each time :)

Hi Paul,

love the photo of your daughter - you've captured a really innocent expression on her face that's at odds with what she's doing - it made me laugh.

and the one of your son is great too. I can't comment on the way you've set the lighting up as I've yet to dip my toes into the world of flash, but it has worked very well. I tend to agree with you about the clothes, maybe something with less pattern would have been better. I do like the fact that he's looking at the flame rather than the camera though - you can see he's really concetrating on not getting his fingers burnt.

Bold, nice idea Paul and kids will most certainly push the boundaries, being somewhat bold ;)
Nothing to add to the other comments really, but I agree with you, that maybe slightly more subtle clothing may
have been better.

Like both shots Paul - the one you've chosen is right on theme too - he was bold! ( Hope you didn't get in trouble for getting him to do it!) Nice lighting and like the look on his face when you've taken it. :)

Bold indeed, some would say foolhardy but they have to learn somehow! :)

Definitely BOLD but looks, as you have said yourself, quite posed and stiff (although I need talk after this week's submission :p) and his clothes detract a little from the rest of the image. Would he have responded if you'd asked him to give you his 'being naughty' look?

Bold definitely fits the theme Paul, a good well executed image.

Phil

The mono version of your daughter is something else.
I do like the lighting of your son, and think it was worth the trouble you probably got into over it!

Well thank you Lorraine, that's very kind of you to say all that. Appreciate the comments and feedback!

Thanks Chris - always good to try to do something different for theme!

That's an excellent take on the theme you must've put a lot of thought behind the idea. I thought the lighting is good and you caught the moment just spot on.

Hi Stan, thanks - yes, I do try to do something unusual for most themes. Sometimes I just run out of time and/or energy though!

Like both shots Paul - the one you've chosen is right on theme too - he was bold! ( Hope you didn't get in trouble for getting him to do it!) Nice lighting and like the look on his face when you've taken it. :)

Thanks Mich... not too much trouble although Mrs pjm1 is on the hunt for a new car now. I don't think the two are connected, but I suspect I've done something wrong at some point to trigger that!

Love both you photos for bold Paul.

Like the lighting in the second one.

Hi Darren, thanks for the positive feedback - the lighting was fun to set up and although not perfect, worked well enough I think.

Bold indeed, some would say foolhardy but they have to learn somehow! :)

Cheers Martin! Agree with that sentiment ;)

Hi Jill... not quite as bold as your pic! You're just saying that clothes detract because nobody can level that claim at you ;) Only kidding of course, I agree with you and just wish I'd been a bit bolder with my shot! Your idea on getting him to do a naughty look is a very good one... lesson for next time! Thanks as always (y)

Bold definitely fits the theme Paul, a good well executed image.

Phil

Hi Phil, thanks for that - appreciated.

I do like the lighting of your son, and think it was worth the trouble you probably got into over it!

Hi Hazel - glad you liked them and thanks for the very positive comment on the quick "grabshot" of little miss pjm1!

Right, quick turnaround today as about to head out to take a new car for a testdrive for Mrs pjm1  Apparently we need something different from the current wagon. Or so I'm told...

Here's my take on Relax... ironically, it's not my idea of relaxing (not a golf fan!) but I think the overall idea applies. I was out in the garden looking for macro subjects (new macro lens arrived this morning and therefore requires me to take a macro shot for this week's theme!) No sign of bugs or buds, but did happen across a dirty old golf ball.

08: Relax
by pjm1 (Paul), on Flickr

For me, this shot was all about getting the DOF and lighting "just right". I haven't quite succeeded on the latter as I had to make the contrast pop out a bit more in post, but strong sidelighting was the order of the day, from frame left (bare flash with diffuser very close to ball). I bounced a bit of light back from the other side (frame right) with a piece of folded A4 paper and moved it until the light from that side more or less equalled the light from the flash. Both light sources were then angled slightly toward camera, so they were about 20 degrees "behind" the subject, but still mainly side-lighting.

The DOF was what I wanted (originally shot with wider aperture but it was just too shallow) - I didn't want the writing at the top to be too in focus and I really wanted the dirt to jump out, so chose the DOF to maximise that.

It was fun doing (took about 20 shots in total!) and you can tell that macro isn't exactly by strongest suit in photography... but now I have a new toy hopefully that will start to change :)

Comments and crit always welcome and I will be catching up with more of your photos this weekend! SOOC shot here for comparison.

Nice idea and great detail on the item in question. Nothing relaxing about the way I play golf, but I get your drift. Good use of macro. Enjoy your new toy and thanks for inspiring me to get own macro gear out and have a go. Not used it lately.

Hey Paul!.... I'm playing catchup for some inexplicable reason![emoji16]

Watery: beautiful shot. Love the central reflection and the blues are stunning - cracking PP on it!

Bold: I know it was only a placeholder for you but it's another great shot! That cheeky look made my smile [emoji5]️. Your official entry: the idea behind is fab. Think you've answered your own question on lowkey and children - yes it does work pretty well actually! Lighting is great (as always![emoji16]). I think I would've picked a smaller Aperture as you were thinking about.... I can see where you were heading with the slight differential but I'm not sure it's warranted in this kind of shot where the whole scene is the focal point (If that makes sense?)

Relax: very quick off the mark! It's not something I would find relaxing either but many people do for some reason![emoji16] It's a good shot - really like the fact you've not focussed on the obvious (writing) and gone for the dirt[emoji5]️

Hi, Paul, I used to play golf a lot...must dust the clubs off sometime :)

It was relaxing around 5% of the time and "I'm gonna break all my clubs!" the other 95% of the time :(

Macro is not easy. I have a Nikon 105 and the DOF is very thin, even at F16.

I'd like the text in focus, and it's not. The sharpest I can see is the lower left dimple (if that's the word ) You've got some decent whites in there, but I'd like the shadows lifting a little. Might have been a stacking opportunity.

Composition is nice and I'm really glad you didn't clean it.

Cheers and enjoy your macro, it's a fascinating world

Hi Paul - well that was quick!

I know lots of people enjoy golf (even if I don't understand why), so it certainly fits the theme, and nice to try out a new lens too. Macro is difficult, but well worth it - when you look at things so close up you see amazing detail.

As Andy has said, some of the writing isn't sharp, but I'm not saying I'd have done better!

:-)
