The speed read of that page makes a salient point that such a service can have a high cost and clearly the owner was not able to properly monetise it :( but at the very least he has protected (?) the subscribers images!

Please tell us that the cloud storage that appears to have evaporated wasn't your only storage and was just a backup that could be accessed from anywhere...
 
I used to use it years back, even won a few Photo of the day awards - was cool at the time. But it's been down a very long time afaik. I certainly wouldn't rely on a service like that as the only way to store my images, only ever upload copies.
 
The test of the owner and his statement that images & accounts are safe and protected will be if the OP asks him for a copy of all of his images ~ perhaps by offering to ship the owner a HDD to be returned by a fully tracked service???
