weekly Pitkin2020's Week 52: Week 3, 8, 11, 13, 23, 24, 25

Been feeling like rubbish this week so not ventured too far but caught up on some more of the previous weeks

Week 2 - Play - Kids doing what they do best, playing. I was going to crop this with just the eldest (left) showing him mid air but my youngest looking on I thought added to it
week 2 - Play by devonD90, on Flickr

Week 10 - Time - wanted to get out for this but saw a watch thread on here and thought I would give it a go. Not great but I think it sort of works.
Week 10 - Time by devonD90, on Flickr

Week 12 - linked - took this last week just hadn't uploaded it till now, it came out roughly how I wanted it but a better angle would have worked better I think. Depth of field is how I wanted it though.
week 12 - linked by devonD90, on Flickr

Week 20 - Number(s) & Reshoot - sorry boring shot I know weather and illness has stopped getting out or being imaginative lol. Reshoot is of fresh and I know daisies were done to death
Week 20 - numbers by devonD90, on Flickr

Week 20 - Reshoot fresh by devonD90, on Flickr

darn it still got 8 more weeks till im caught up

Hi numbers it's on theme but doesn't really grab me, anyway post and be damned.

Reshoot it's on theme and nice subject matter by the harsh light doesn't do you any favours. Nice Low angle.

Cheers.

Hi Richard

flippin nora....how many weeks

Shape......sort of reminds me of the " Tales of the Un-Expected " series on TV a long time back....well done on trying something different & to your good lady for assisting  I prefer #2....better lighting (y)

Mineral...edited version works better but really not sure on the vibrant green.....seems to detract from the main subject ?

Line/Linear.......lovely curves , mono suits ...maybe just lift the shadows a little to bring some more definition in the structure back ?

PLay....good fun shot , sharp & well exposed :)

Time...simple, effective , well lit...quite liking that one (y)

Hi there ..you must be virtually caught up by now :) well done for getting this far.

Play ...I really like the jump caught in mid air, maybe a crop would give it that extra impact, but they do look as if they are having fun so it fits the theme perfectly.

Time ...as above ...as simple shot but it looks effective.

Linked ...I like this one ... looks good in mono.

Numbers ... sometimes you just have to go for it !

The daisies ... surely we can never have too many of them :) ... again I think a crop would work.

Play- good choice not to crop the youngest out Richard, he looks very impressed, great image (y)

I'm liking linked, the very shallow dof works really well here, detail in the chain and conversion to b&w's good (y)

Well done with all this catching up!

Hi Richard,
Well done on your catch up..
Play....lovely picture of your family look as tho' they are having great fun and I agree that having the little one on too works :)
Time ... it fits the theme nice and simple good one :)
Linked...plenty links the dof works well :)
Numbers... it fits the theme, its simple :)
re-shoot....Nice patch of daisys, perhaps a portrait crop would work :)

Hi Richard

hope you're feeling better

Numbers.......on theme & simple ( which is good sometimes ) , like that it leads in from the corner.......need to sort the white balance or use something to light it a little more ?

Fresh re-shoot...lovely whites & yellows :) agree re the crop

Well done on the catch up , don't put yourself under too much pressure though (y)

Just had a 2 min play in ps with numbers....shout up if you'd rather I take it down , just thought I'd show what I mean rather than just say the words..... by no means perfect as start image was a small jpeg & I ain't the best with pp

thanks for the feedback, yeah it was a post and be damned week lol, wasn't really inspired by the theme and feeling rubbish so couldn't put some of the ideas I had into practice.

Thanks for the feedback, line/linear I actually increased the shadows IIRC because I wanted to define the edges of the roof more if that makes sense?
can't believe my vibrant green for mineral didn't go down well lol, i see what you mean though.

thanks for the feedback, seems the consesus is I need to make my crops tighter when doing close ups so thats something i'll try for next time.
Time was meant to be numbers but then I remembered I still had time to do lol

Thanks for the feedback, i'm glad people like the DOF i linked I wasn't sure if it was just a little too much or not.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't have any issues with people playing with images in this thread it all helps and you've made a big difference to that image. I'm pretty rubbish at PP but TBH i never really noticed the background until you pointed it out and you can clearly see a big difference makes the image look much cleaner and the numbers actually defined more.
I only have lightroom so will have to look more into sorting that out on future images. IIRC this was lit just using natural lights, I only have onboard flash which I find quite hard to use without getting massive shadows everywhere.

Now you have pointed it out I can see it in the other images like action where the wall behind was brilliant white. Twisted in the same but I think that has probably worked in my favour with white wires lol

Hi, sorry seem to have missed you up to now, well done for attempting the catch up, if it gets frustrating just start with the latest subject forget the others for now it will give you more time to think things over

Hi - get well soon!
You've done really well catching up I think, especially for being this far in.
I think the numbers shot is good, I think the edit is certainly better all-round really.

Fresh reshoot works for the theme - nice whites like Lynne said.

Link is certainly good - I like the framing and the DOF and that it's in B&W - same comments go to "Time".

I like the play shot - you've captured them having a great time and in the air is always good!

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement it seen really helpful.
I am catching up slowly lol but feels a bit like cheating aswell as I have more time on some of the older themes to think of something or find inspiration, doesn't mean they are any better of course lol

week 5 - smoke/smokey - "No smoke without fire"
Week 5 - Smoke-1 by devonD90, on Flickr

Week 14- Nature/Natural -morning dew, simple nature shot lol. Tried some wildlife/bugs but thatdidn't go too well they all move to fast
Week 14 - Nature by devonD90, on Flickr

week 21 - Strength, the mighty snail lol. Huge strength to be able to drag its own body weight and its heavy shell for miles and miles
Week 21 - Strength 2 by devonD90, on Flickr

Week 22- Texture-simple one this week just like it. Pretty much straight out of the camera just a minor tweak and crop

You've some great images there.
Nature/Natural is the winner for me out of these. I really love it, such detail.
I would have liked to see more of that snail in focus, but you got its head, which I guess is the best point to choose.
Texture is certainly on theme and shows the bark really well. I like the composition.
I love the fun nature of the Smoke image. Nice and creative!

Thanks for the feedback.
Snail for strong was more an after thought if I'm honest I made it fit the theme rather than taken for it.

Smoke I really enjoyed doing

Wow, is that you up to date then? You've done really well! Love Smoke - nice bit of humour in there :D

Smoke, I like the processing and it's a quirky photograph. Pity the smoke blends into the vehicle.

Natural. On theme, but doesn't really grab me. I'd like a little more light.

Strength, wonderful take on the theme and good low angle.

Texture, nice textures there and muted tones.

Cheers.

Thanks

Not quite caught up yet have 6 more I think to go.

Yeah I was hoping for more smoke another angle may have worked better. It was a nightmare trying to light such a small fire lol. I actually buried a tea light and pulled twigs on top.
The processing I was hoping for that lay evening sun setting glow?? I have posted in general>creative for some critique as I'm not sure of I have over processed it

At the rate you're going you should have it nailed by this time next week then ;)

I only started in February, so I had a bit of catching up to do, but I just banged 'em out and thought soddit  :$ But you've had a real marathon to catch up with and you've obviously put a lot more thought and effort into it than I did, so you have my deepest respect

Thanks, some have been just posted though lol. Stuck on ideas for a couple of the weeks now but hopefully another two weeks and I'll be caught up and I'll only have to focus on one theme lol

Hi, quite like smoke image smoke does get a bit lost but it a nice different attempt
Nature some nice light on the water drops
strength nice pic of the snail and a great idea for the theme
Texture not too sure on the white space but plenty of texture there

HI ya

Smoke....love the set up , the lowish POV & the glow from the fire (y) Slight crit would be to add more room to the right side of the image & lose it from the left

Nature....good focus on the drop, good colors & DOF (y) possibly crop a smidge from the rhs to make the droplet less central ?

Strength.....you've done really well to get both it's eye's in focus ( they tend to move them about a lot !) like the placement in the frame as well :)

Week 7 - Sense
A selfie to give a sense to the sheer size of Cathedral which is an underground cavern in part of the complex underground mine in Wiltshire. 30 Second exposure.

Well done on getting through these Richard

Prefer your first smoke image dof wise, like the snail, detail in the head and eyes look good (y)......possibly a little more dof again to get a little more from the shell :)

Your shot for sense I like a lot , it really does show a sense of scale, amazing (y)

Edit- just had a quick Google and found its called the Box Mine. I'm a regular visitor to the area, ( well CWP and Malmesbury) is this place just open for you to go in? I'd love to have a look round, might even be down 3 days from Thursday, any info would be great :)

2nd Edit-
images
......Didn't notice your Flickr title.....Box Mine Cathedral :D

It is sort of open Phil to the public you do need a key and I can give you more info on that if you pm me.
If you do go in you'll need a map, DO NOT ATTEMPT it without one, the pics make it look like a walk in the park, it really isn't and even with the map took us over half an hour just to get out lol.
We were down there for about 7 hours this time, it is a great place but time flies.
Cathedral is actually one of the easier places to get to and depending on which way you go in can take an hour or 30 mins to get to.

If you want anymore info drop me a pm I don't live near there myself as I'm in North Devon but visited it a couple of times now and there are dozens more in the area

I'm even more intrigued now :D, pm inbound Richard, cheers :)

Welcome. A bit of catching up for you to do LOL

Twisted - Nice colours and use of the diagonal. I prefer the original to the edit.

Linear - Well spotted although I feel it needs just a touch of exposure boost on this one.

Action - Well caught in mid jump but I feel it needed to be taken when the skateboarder was facing you

Mono - The eye is drawn nicely along the bay. I do think the lack of contrast is lletting this one down though

Fresh - Similar feeling about the contrast on this one probably due to the very flat lighting on the day

Bubbles - Plenty of bubbles but no real interest I'd afraid

Mineral - A little oof but an interesting find. The edit is is much better

Shape - I like the lighting on these. #2 works just a little stronger

Play - Good action shot. Great expression in the right hand child

Time - Good use of the diagonal and a clean background

Linked - Nice shallow DoF plus the composition of the chain going into the top right corner

Number - I feel the lighting has let you down on this one

Reshoot - The daisies are a bit too central for me and maybe a bit of gardening on the dead heads would have helped. Well done for going in low though.

Smoke - Super shot. Well done for adding the smoke to this one. Nice shallow DoF as well

Nature - Another shallow DoF which greatly improves this image. The drops of water also help lift the picture

Strength - I like the shallow DoF again but maybe in this case just a tad more to bring the front of the shell in focus would have been good

Texture - Not as strong as the last few I'm afraid. Maybe it's the blown sky that has brought it down. You've certainly captured the texture in the bark though

Sense - Wow. Impressive location. How quick did you have to run to get in the picture? LOL

I can't believe how well you've been catching up. Welcome to the mad house

Week 7 sense absolutely fantastic I love it it does give off a sense of scale.

Thank you its certainly helps to have someone in it for a sense of scale.

Welcome. A bit of catching up for you to do LOL

Twisted - Nice colours and use of the diagonal. I prefer the original to the edit.

Linear - Well spotted although I feel it needs just a touch of exposure boost on this one. I actually reduced the exposure when editing this as i thought the sky was pretty boring and wanted to really highlight the edges of the roof, other tweaks were made aswell but cant remember exactly what i did lol

Action - Well caught in mid jump but I feel it needed to be taken when the skateboarder was facing you

Mono - The eye is drawn nicely along the bay. I do think the lack of contrast is lletting this one down though most of landscape type of shots seem to end up a bit washy

Fresh - Similar feeling about the contrast on this one probably due to the very flat lighting on the day

Bubbles - Plenty of bubbles but no real interest I'd afraid I really struggled with this theme it was a "post and be damned" lol

Nice shallow DoF as well I didn't add the smoke the in PP if thats what you meant, it was all real, enjoyed doing this shot was really fun, got a few strange looks from the local dog walkers though lol.

You've certainly captured the texture in the bark though I really liked this one, i did do a close crop of just the bark but prefered it with the sky

Sense - Wow. Impressive location. How quick did you have to run to get in the picture? LOL That was a nightmare, i sent it up to use with the IR remote. Everything was focused and good to go. Moved into position, pressed the remote......nothing I was too far away for it to work. Had to go back down again as my friends didn't know how to take the remote setting off. 3 attemps i think it took lol

I can't believe how well you've been catching up. Welcome to the mad house

Thanks for the feedback everyone, loving the constructive crit its really helpful

I have gone and got myself behind again but have a few images ready to sort out and hope to get them up ASAP, i'll probably bulk post again once this weeks theme is done

Another mega catch up week for me with 7 to post. I apologise in advance, some are from a day in the park where I have made them fit the theme a bit of post it and be damned in my effort to get caught up before the halfway mark.

Week 3 - Close(d)
A closed door, not inspiring and not really much more to say on this.

week 3 - close by devonD90, on Flickr

Week 8 - Ending -Ashes to ashes
I had the idea of grave stones but struggled to get a decent angle with them in view without a rubbish background - light was really harsh today in the bright sunlight

week 8 - Ending by devonD90, on Flickr

Week 11 - Swirl
Had this idea for the theme for a while as it was one of the the themes before i started but didn't have chance to do until recently.
Well this is the first attempt at spinning wire wool, its not great (i'll admit it), the biggest problem I had was actually getting the wire wool to light, needs more practice and experimenting.

week 11 - swirl by devonD90, on Flickr

Week 13 - Steps
How hard should it be to find some interesting steps, well it appears very hard when you can't get out and about to find some. When i did find some by total accident I didn't have my camera with me grrrr. Again another one made to fit the theme from my day at the park in a hope to catch up.

week 13 - step by devonD90, on Flickr

week 23 - wild
Semi wild, does that count?? Close enough for a catch up lol
Inquisitive little piglets

week 23- wild by devonD90, on Flickr

Week 24 - Dream/dreamy - "Summers daydream".
Tough pick for this week, really struggled with finding something to fit the theme so I squeezed this into in, kind of round peg square hole scenerio. Candid shot PABD.

week 24 - Dream (day dream) by devonD90, on Flickr

week 25 - Vertical - Local church spire peeking through the trees. Wasn't very inspired this week TBH so a few of these are post and be damned - sorry.

week 25- vertical by devonD90, on Flickr

Well thats me nearly caught up, I have just one left, Week 9 - Positive. Strangely not feeling very positive about it but hopefully i'll find some new found inspiration with this weeks theme when its announced.

Wow, lots of photos.

Close - it fits the theme!
Ending - sombre take but good detail and the B&W makes it work really well.
Swirl - great idea and something I'm thinking of having a go at, at some point. Great setting too and I like that as you look, the detail of the rocks gradually increases
Steps - I think the subject against the overcast sky works well and especially again so in B&W. The steps content may be a little weak, but overall picture I like
Wild - Pigs are wild are they not?! :) One Pink one B&W, I like that and the focus is right on their heads.
Dream/Dreamy - I think this works better because of the hazy edge effect you've used. Without it, I wouldn't have liked it much. It's nice that it's just them in the picture though.
Vertical - I like the framing accentuating the Tower. It gives a sense of expectation to come out of the trees and see the vast building.

Cheers

Thank you for the positive feedback it's really appreciated.
I think sometime changing a pic to mono can save it and strangely make it a bit more interesting.

And another mega catch up Richard, well done (y)

Liking the pigs, stand out one for me too though is the church spire through the trees (y).......could have done with cloning out the child? in the green coat disappearing into the trees though :)

Lol that's my little boy in a green t shirt he wouldn't get out of the way and have various shots of him photo bombing it lol.

Not totally figured out the clone feature in Lightroom I tend to make a big mess rather than remove anything lol

Hi Richard, closed, works as an idea but very dark no detail in the door and I think you needed to stand exactly opposite the door
Ending, i like the composition but as you say very harsh light
swirl, not a fan of this, not keen on seeing the person I feel this only works in a good location not sure thats it.
Wild, nice piglets needs a little lift brightness wise
Dreamy, works quite well, more to do with the processing, lot of distractions in the BG
vertical, I like it bit of a crop to the left hand side maybe, but i like that you can just about see the vertical

Hi Richard, closed, works as an idea but very dark no detail in the door and I think you needed to stand exactly opposite the door
agree, i realised that when processing it the angle wasn't the best and the light again was super bright even though this was on the shaded side lol
Ending, i like the composition but as you say very harsh light
same day uber bright, i wish I had used this location for a bit of long exposure at night now
swirl, not a fan of this, not keen on seeing the person I feel this only works in a good location not sure thats it.
agree, you can only really see me as it was a nightmare to do and my companion had a bright light covering the area but this was the first attempt. The location i chose specifically as i wanted the closeness of the walls to hopefully send the sparks bouncing around......it didn't go to plan lol
Wild, nice piglets needs a little lift brightness wise
its odd as i lifted the brightness and looked really bright in lightroom but it does look darker again now
Dreamy, works quite well, more to do with the processing, lot of distractions in the BG
thanks, i was really stumped for this theme lol
vertical, I like it bit of a crop to the left hand side maybe, but i like that you can just about see the vertical
you mean to make it with the spire dead square with equal sides?

thanks for the feedback its appreciated

Well, thats bl**dy annoying. Spent about twenty minutes commenting and lost connection so lost it all ggrrrr

'Fraid I don't have time to do it again  :$ But some interesting submissions.

Regarding the wire wool, did you use the fine wool? Works much better and in that tight location it will get some crackers. But wear a hat :) I use a battery to light the wool, one with positive and negative connections on the top ...trying to Google a better description but connection I'd naff.

I like the vertical submission with the slither of the church.

Sorry I can't comment more and hope I don't loose this post!!

Cheers.
