Hi guys, I'm fairly new to this forum so just to give you all a little background info...

I'm mainly a commercial photographer based in the studio but I try to do as much sport as I can, I've covered Super League Rugby, Championship football and last year I was club photographer for York City FC. I know what I'm doing with the kit I have and up to now all of my work has been for the clubs themselves so apart from sending the odd image for web at half time, I've never done any live wiring. However, I'm at the point where I believe my images and skills are good enough to approach agencies and try to get work this way. (I have recently relocated to australia so don't worry, I won't be stepping on any toes!!)

This leads me to my questions....

Can anyone recommend a decent, fast card reader that doesn't break the bank? I currently download images to my laptop at half time (when shooting football/rugby) using a really cheap one, it works fine but it's slow and it has such a long cable I'm considering tying it up and sticking to the back of my laptop with velcro or something!

I also use my iphone set up as a personal wifi hotspot to connect to the internet to email the odd photo that I need to. Does anyone know of any problems with doing this? Should I get a dongle for internet access?

Last question, it may be subjective, and some of you will probably know what your agencies etc prefer, but personally, do you get more satisfaction from getting a really nice action shot or a good cele shot? ie. if you had to choose between say getting the shot of a footballer heading the ball past the keeper to score or getting a shot of him as he ran towards you celebrating, what would you choose? Hopefully you'd get both but you know what I mean!!

I personally get more satisfaction getting the action shot but most of the feedback I've got is that the cele shots make more of an impact on the fans etc.

I was replying to the OP Rob, wasn't pulling you up.

You would be suprised how many people are still using USB 2.0

Hi Steven.
Australia may be different for published images but IMO, apart from the odd Sunday Times action shot, Championship & below Football useages are purely goal scoring shots or Celes unless used by the trade papers!.
I personally use a Lexar Pro USB 3.0 card reader which is very quick with the later 60/ 90MPS CF cards.
I do not however like there newer USB cable design though!, as it pulls out of the card reader too readily when moved and so maybe a built in laptop USB 3.0 reader or Firewire?.
I know guys who swear by there 4G phones as hubs but I also bought a 4G Acatel MIFI card reader with a PAYG data card just in case :). Kind regards Graham.

Aint that the worst design ever mate, just as bad as the mini HDMI connector.

Haha my laptop only has USB2..

Thanks for the responses everyone, I use an oldish macbook for sports stuff it's USB 2.0 so I guess a semi decent reader and a fast card can only get me so far, fast enough though I would have thought?

Will check those readers out.

That alcatel MIFI set up looks pretty nice, no harm in using one of those and having my phone as back up hey!

I use the same card reader and know exactly what you mean re connection

I got an Express Card 34 USB3 adapter, but it wouldn't stay in.

I'd recommend a FireWire 800 card reader, but they're now as rare as hens teeth. But look out for second hand ones (like the one here), but beware of overinflated prices on Ebay.

(NB: I've no connection to the seller I linked to, but I've got two of these readers and they've functioned faultlessly for many years.)
