Pink Hue on Negs

Hi peeps,

I have just developed a roll of Neopan and have noticed a very slight pink hue on the negs, more noticeable on the clear areas.

I had a quick google for info and mostly found that it can be caused by weak or exhausted fixer.

Problem is, I don't reuse my fixer (Ilford Rapid), it's always new straight out the bottle.

I have only ever developed Neopan once maybe twice before and never really noticed this effect. My last film I developed was Ilford HP5+ and I certainly did not notice a pink hue on that or any previous Ilford films.

Although it doesn't affect matter too much as the film will eventually be scanned as B&W and any futher correction, if needed, can be done then.

I have read that certain films do have quite a strong hue, more so Kodak, where sometimes it is nigh on impossible to remove it with fixing and washing.

I developed this film exactly as I always do so not really anything there that could have caused it.

Could my fixer be going 'off' in the bottle?

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Regards..,

How old is your fixer? Is it airtight?

How long did you fix it for? I found this on my first roll and I think I read somewhere to double the normal fix time for Neopan in Ilford Rapid Fix. Not had it since (I refixed my purple negs after they were dry and they went clear).

About 4 months and yes I keep it airtight and also all my chems are stored in a sealed cardboard box in a dark cupboard just to be on the safe side.

I fix for 5 minutes and invert 4 times per minute. Ilford says 2-5mins but I have always stuck to 5 just to be on the side of caution.
Interesting what you have said about Neopan needing longer in Ilford Rapid, maybe that is something I can look at. I may do a refix when they are dry also.

Cheers..,

It's a long time since I did any developing, but doesn't Neopan have a slight pink base layer? I'm sure T-Max used to as well

I may be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time:)

Sounds similar to what i do, but i then let it sit in the fix for a futher 5 mins without agitation. Might be a bit ott but i don't get purple negs any more ;)

Possibly your right there but because I normally process Ilford stock it stands out a lot to me.

I will bear that in mind for the future as I still have a number of rolls of the Fuji left.

I have just found this on Ilford site so I don't think I was originally under fixing.

The negs are dry now and I have just hung the strip in my front room against a white wall and it really shows as decidedly purple not a slight pink like I thought earlier from the crappy light in my bathroom.

Later tonight I will reload the roll onto a spool and leave it to soak for a while and see what happens.

Regards..,

OK, I rewound the film back onto a spool and let it soak in fixer for about an hour I think, I just left it alone.
After a rinse and spin cycle all the pink is gone, great stuff.

Regards.

I shot some neopan 400 a while back and it had no casts in ddx and rapid fix, the negs looked just like fp4/hp5/delta or any of the others I use :S
