Contemplating change from my manfrotto pl4 heads through conversion to arca swiss. Will be aided by a new travel tripod and head which i expect the red suited white bearded guy to bring from 3lt which has an arca head.

Looking at options for an L bracket for d850 and d810 as one of the advantages of arca would be for portrait orientation shots without dangling the camera off the side of the head. I came across pig iron as a supplier who seem much lower cost than most others but with a 5 yr warranty

Does anyone have experience of the quality/ robustness of their L brackets?

Its 2 bits of aluminium bolted together not much to go wrong. Im using a £16 unbranded one from amazon, short of dropping it attached to the camera i cant see how i would damage it

The only down side is that mine and i suspect the pig iron one is universal so doesnt have cut outs to access the ports on the left side of the camera,
Mine needs to be about 10mm from the body to allow access to the battery port with out loosening it off

That’s what i thought re the 2 bits of aluminium but was a bit concerned there might be something i was missing. Struggled to see the value in a £150 L bracket. I don’t need access to the side ports very often (my experience of tethered shooting was terrible) and these both have the wired remote release at the front.

Thanks for that.

It looks like a fairly standard universal bracket. The advantage is that it's cheap; the disadvantage is that it's more likely to twist than a dedicated bracket. A dedicated bracket for the D850 is £50 on eBay which is pretty trivial compared with the cost of the camera.

I wouldn’t get a universal bracket that comes in two parts bolted together. That’s already a weak point.

Have a look at sunwayfoto. They’re around £50 but a solid bracket made specifically for your camera. You won’t break one of those.

I was looking at L brackets the other day on ebay and for my camera (80d) and couldn't believe the price £134. This seems a little bit excessive to me. The bracket for an 80d is a strange shape, to allow for the flippy screen and port access. I'm not sure I would use it enough to justify the price.

how will a dedicated bracket twist more than a dedicated one. if both are placed tight to the side of the camera body it cant physically twist. just looked at a model specific really right stuff bracket for £150. its plain metal, my sub £20 bracket has rubber pads and is yet to twist. im not sure what problem slight twisting would cause.

Standard arca swiss plates are not specific and dont have anything to stop twisting
