Hi guys, bit of a conundrum, ive a few cameras the question i have is to do with Raw pics and resolution mega pixel stuff, ive a few cameras, from a 100d to a 1d mk2 and some in between, now the 5d takes pics at about 18mp and the 1d at about 8mp, and i know after editing they are around 3-5 mp. So am i loosing quality using the 1d over the 5d due to it having 8mp raw pictures....although the 1d has a faster shutter speed which is the only advantage that i can see, hope this makes sense !

The answer is obvious - if you're concerned about picture quality (in a technical sense), look at the pictures! They'll tell you everything you need to know. All the rest is just talk.

You seem focussed on Mpx but resolution is only one aspect of an image. And one that probably needs the context of end usage factoring in.

Totally agree, and my 5d performs better than my 1d mk2 but it was just one of those techie questions that I've thought about for ages which came to the fore now I'm selling the 1d. I sort of already knew the answer but was just after some confirmation.

would say to sell both and get a used 5d mk 3 for a bargain £400 - £450.

It was about the 5d mk 3 era that cameras started to get really good

Yea, thats the plan, my 5d mk2 is good but im saving for the next level up.

I think shooting raw and processing each shot for the best effect is the thing to do unless you're taking an awful lot of pictures and are pressed for time.

Other than that.
Sorry to do the obvious and possibly unwelcome thing... :D ... But have you thought about mirrorless? I think anyone looking to spend a reasonable amount of money these days should at least take a quick sideways glance and mirrorless even if they end up rejecting it.

It's a long time since I had a 5D and that was only the original and my only experience of the 5DII has been processing pictures taken with one by a family member and that little process convinced me that the aging 5DII is at least matched and very probably bettered by the smaller and more recent MFT and APS-C systems. So, if looking to move on from an aging Canon DSLR system I think I'd at least take a quick look at what's available from mirrorless today from MFT and upwards before going for the next rung up on the Canon DSLR ladder, but of course I don't know how invested in Canon lenses you are or what your possible budget is.

Great advice guys, looking at the mirrorless options to !

Just one little tempter or two for mirrorless...

One great thing is that you can focus accurately and consistently anywhere in the frame (rather than be limited to focus points all clustered around the centre as you are with a DSLR) and this gives compositional freedom especially when coupled to face/eye detect for people pictures.

Another advantage is that you can see the picture you're going to get before you press the button, DoF and exposure and all and you can if you want to manually focus very accurately using a greatly magnified view.

Good luck researching and choosing and there's nothing to stop you going for another DSLR if you decide that mirrorless just isn't for you.

So am i loosing quality using the 1d over the 5d due to it having 8mp raw pictures.
Personally, I'd far rather get an interesting picture than chase the chimera of technical perfection.

The cameras you mention are capable of producing acceptable images, so why not concentrate on making the images interesting rather than worrying about the number of pixells?

Hi Andrew, defiantly agree and i do get some brilliant pictures ( i think lol ) it was just one of the technical questions ive always pondered without seriously investigating.

you don't need a lot more sensor resolution than you are going to use/output (~ 2x at most).
Very true.

On the other hand: the more pixels you start with the more you can crop away, when your lens isn't long enough for the subject...
