As some of you guys know that I am interested in upgrading to a Canon 40D from my Canon 400D... The BIG question is will i see a different in Picture quality being taken from the 2 using the very same lens? ie My Canon 17 - 40 L Lens

No help on this?

I know their be a different between the function and handling between the camera but like to know if there be a different in Picture that comes out of them

To be honest there won't be too much difference in the quality...the upgrade will however give you the usual enhancements such as higher fps etc :)

You'll gain 2million pixels with the 40D and a larger max (1:1) file size. The difference in quality will be there, but with a lens like the 17-40L you're not going to see a huge improvement tbh unless you're doing really large prints.

Where you would see an improvement in 'reach' is with longer lenses.

Really...

Why do some people say I will? Also someone told me that the viewfinder is better too it looks clearer and the LCD is better too as you get a better idea what your picture is like compare to the LCD on the 400d I just dont know what to believe ... Maybe I need to have a go with one?

Using the same lens and the same settings I doubt you will see any difference at all - I struggle to see any difference between my 350D and 40D a lot of the time.

agree. you wont see much in quality difference. I moved from a 350 to a 40d. the biggest difference i that I found it a lot better to use. the controls and layout work much better.

spend the money on glass for now.

Yeah the viewfinder is much larger and brighter and the screen probably bigger, cant remember how big it is on the 400D

Not a great deal of difference between my 350d and my 40d image wise to be honest apart from size of image very slightly better noise control a few more features, better, brighter viewfinder, larger screen and a better build. In a nut shell ;)

But what pee's me off is when i take pictures looking at the picture on my LCD on the cam is way off from what i say on my Mac.... I was told viewing picture on the LCD of the 40D is more or less what you would see on my Mac.... The colour and the like is better on the 40D LCD.. Also one feature that interest me on the 40D is the LiveView

The difference is there but you really only notice it at higher ISOs then the noise on the xxxD range starts to show up.

So using ISO 400 on the 40D would be better than the 400D... Now that is one thing I like to hear as i do sometime take pictures at ISO 400 even 600 sometime and I do see noise

The 40D has the new Digic 1V processor, so you will see an improvement in noise. I think the question you need to ask yourself is - is there another bit of glass you fancy, as you'd probably gain more benefit from that.

Dont really need any new Glass at the moment but do plan to get either a 70 - 200 L or a 100 - 400 L

:naughty::naughty::naughty: More likely being a 70 - 200 as i dont seem to like the way the 100 - 400 works And too much for my pockets

Are you shooting RAW?

I thought it was Digic III, the IV in the 50D, I think.....

:nono: Digic III ;)

Must agree on the money rather going towards good glass though:thumbs:

It's pretty much been covered, but to summarise (I've just sold a 400D for a 40D):

- The 40D is heavier and handles much better (esp with battery grip) in my opinion
- The digi display on the top is a godsend
- The control layout is infinitely better and I've managed to change settings quick enough to catch shots where the 400D would have lost them
- The LCD is bigger, brighter, and has a much better colour to it
- LOADS more menu features and custom option to setup quick change settings
- Flash sync cable port
- Spot metering
- Better sensor which makes a big difference to noise handling. Shooting up to ISO400 introduces very little noise
- Liveview which is great for macro/still life shooting

If you want better IQ, buy an L lens. If you want better handling, buy the 40D.

Of course... my bad... Digic 3 it is. You will be moving up from Digic2 in the 400d to Digic 3 in the 40D.

Too many damned Digics of late! ;)

Ive had the very same dilemma, upgrading fom the 400 to either the 40 or 50D. After some great advice on here I decided the 40D was the 1 I would go for. I then brought new glass into the arena and decided that a 40D would do exactly what my 400D does (albeit a little better) but a 10-22 would give me a whole new way of seeing the world.
The 10-22 won and the new body can wait till the new year and I'll maybe get a better deal.

Ian.

100-400 works fantastically well. the push pull makes for very fast zooming
:agree: And your left hand is always exactly in the right place to support the lens, so you never risk a missed shot.
