Hi - I was showing someone at work some of my better bird pics which I have printed myself in A4 - To my suprise my colleague wants to use a dozen of them to create a calendar & insists she pays for the pics used - I have no idea how much to charge her? - I was going to burn the pics onto a CD for her to upload to wherever she intends getting the calendar done (photobox or similar I believe) - Any suggestions what I should charge her? Or would be it be better for me to get the calendar done myself & charge her for that based on what it costs me to have it done?

If she is going to be selling the calenders then you could ask for an amount from every one sold. If it is for personal use then i'm not sure. As above its your choice, maybe ask what she would be willing to pay.

i can see your problem . you dont want her to be saying the tight git would only let me have the shot for x amount
but on the other hand you should make something ..

Thanks everyone for your replies - I can see this is a problem that some have had or might have in the future? - The girl at work told me her grandad is an artist / painter - he does wildlife / birds & he'd love to see my pics & possibly paint some of them? So the calendar would be a one off just for him I presume?
I've heard people here & elsewhere talking about pics that they sell online from a gallery website - Maybe somewhere like that would give an idea of what price a pic is worth? (or is it a flexible thing?)
I am tempted just to say "just give me what you like for using the pics" as I wasn't really expecting anything but it would really help to have an idea as at the moment I haven't a scooby :bonk:

Janice and Hacker have had some experience flogging shots on a comercial basis, they may be able to shed some light here.

Its a bit hard to say in your particular case Paul.

I sell A4 unmounted shots at about £15 each - landscapes and whatnot.
Portraits are around the same sort of price.

I would get the calendar made for them I think. Then what they do after that is their lookout.

As for someone painting from one of your photos..not sure what I think of that....or what to charge really. It is your copyright after all. He will no doubt sell the painting afterwards.

I took all the shots for a calendar last year.....Tea Ladies Revealed!! and we sold loads and took over £1,500 for the cricket club...........but I did the photowork free.....as the printer was printing them free.

Your problem really comes about by not knowing what you are selling. Most pros sell on a set of criteria if giving the photos in electronic form. e.g. agreed uses such as "for use in company brochure, advertsing and web-site" or "exclusive use for calendars and greeting cards for 18/24 months". This way you are asking them to pay for use in a certain way which has been agreed and therefore easier to find a mutually agreeable value. Any deviation can then be dealt with legally.

If just giving a print then normal copyright should apply and you should reinforce that statement in the sale invoice.

Like all transactions you should work from a legal/self protection standpoint towards the sale agreement.

Agree with getting the calendar made up, either by yourself or 3rd party. If you give away/sell a disc of images they'll be used everywhere. No reason why you shouldn't take a bit of creative control and bit of extra cash as well...
