This is a crop. Please can anyone tell me the best way to lighten the shadows under the eyes in cs 4?

You could use the dodge tool or maybe clone it away a little?
 
It's not that easy to do well.

Whatever possesed you to take a portrait with a high sun and no cover?

Squinty shrouded eyes and harsh shadows are always going to be the outcome. Fill in flash would have helped the shadows, but you would still have had squinty eyes.

Try to find a location where there is less direct sunlight and where the models eyes will not be screwed up, or take it later or earlier in the day when the sun is lower and position it so the sun is behind or slightly to either side but still from the rear of the model.

I hope this wasn't a paid commission!

Thanks for the replies. It was a snap my daughter took at lunchtime today and she likes the photo but wanted to try and get the shadows out. I removed it from here on her request. She's only 17 and never used my camera before.
