Hi all,

Just a quick one. Dropped some money down and picked up Canon 5D Mark II today and I have a 50mm F1/.2L and 85mm F/1.2L on the way with some other bits and bobs. I hope to review it over the next few days and will report what I find as and when.

So far so good. A lovely camera and right up my street.
My 09 workload which may include large prints for a particular job. For those not in the know, I used to own a 5D back in 06.

Looking forward to playing with HD and stills.....

Pete.

I want one, but I have only managed to raise about £1850, come on people, give me a great price! Please?

Very envious, glad to see some switching the right way :) Have you played with the 50 1.2 before?

Yeah, on the Mark II n's and on the mark III, nice glass, bit twitchy, but no worries. I want if for 1.8 really as razor.

I tend to use the kit that the stuff I am shooting warrants owning is all. A camera is a camera and hopefully I can make the 5D 2 sing a bit now and again.

I love mine Pete :) Best bit of lens kit ''I think'' I have brought. Did you go well known outlet (work discount??) for 5d or bargain basement web deal?

Work. A saving but not much due to the demands Canon put in place on it. I think I said before that retailers are being monitored by Canon after Jessops dropping £80.00 off the G10 retail overnight. From what I heard every retailer small and large went mental over that, including the web ones.

Basically, if you sell it for silly money, your supply chain dries up ;)

Funny industry.

Best of all, I picked up Joanna (my girl) a 1000D which she will love. She has been begging me for an SLR for ages, so thats her Xmas gift!

Can you get group (member) discount at work ;) Enjoy! Good to se Jessops fighting a price war though, many times they have been lambasted for high prices.

Yeah - I think that they are OK to be fair. Have defended them more than once.

Jessops is where I picked my camera up from, they're definitely willing to fight a price war. I reckon nowadays retailers can't afford to be hesitant.

Those 2 lenses are the only reason I'd ever consider switching... But I just don't get on with Canon ergonomics :(

Nikon need some better primes, especially now the D3x slays the 1Ds. :D

There'd be a sharp intake of breath in our house when the bill for that lot arrived:D can I ask why buy 2 lenses which are so similar:)

They are very different though in reality. I have both in f1.4 variety, and the 85 smokes ther 50 for background blur I feel. Better for portraits.

Gary.

How do you mean similar? They're different focal lengths?

But not that different, I would have thought with the 50mm f/1.2 it would just be a matter of one step forward to get the same result as the 85mm, gary has pointed out the difference now though :)

Well stock levels actually :bang:

As it happens I have just ordered the last one from Campkins (proper camera shop based in Cambridge I believe), Body only for £1985 delivered (I wanted to go with the kit as it was going for £2399 and I could have sold the lens for £500 +del but none left), should be here tomorrow. Just have to organise a work from home day tomorrow (I was finishing early anyway so should not be a problem).

Can't wait, I'm like an excited little kid  Watch this space

WOOOOOOOOW 85mm f1.2......awesome.
Have you ever got your hands on one, Gary? It just occurs to me that as a Nikon user you might not. The reason I ask is that it is by some margin the most amazing bit of glass I've ever seen (and you know I've seen quite a lot). There is absolutely nothing made by any manufacturer that has anywhere like the same WOW factor. And that's before you put it on the camera. After... you're hooked. End of.

I can defiantly say its one of Canons finest pieces of glass.

Gives you the WOW (as StewartR says), just like the 400mm 2.8 and 600mm f4.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! :bang:

BLAME FOGGY

only thing is... now I'm looking at new lenses!

So does this mean all your Nikon gear is up for grabs

Welcome back!

I don't really do the brand loyalty thing, it's down to whatever you need to do the job. I do remember when you bought the D3 and it did seem to give you what you needed at the time in terms of critical evaluation.

I hope the 5D gives you a similar boost in inspiration. That 85mm f1.2 certainly should!

That's what I'm afraid of. I'm hiring one from you for shortly for what I expect to be a particularly dark wedding. I'm afraid it'll end up costing me a whole lot more once I've had a chance to use it as I'll end up buying one. I don't know whether I'm happy or sad about it.

You're in exactly the same boat as me. Just recovering from the flu now. What lens are you looking at? my 50mm 1.8 seems to have been rejuvenated on the 5dmkII but I'm looking at some serious lenses now, like the 24-70mm 2.8 L for one.

The 24-70 2.8L is outstanding on my 5D mk1. A whole different lens to what it was on my 30D. I can't recommend it highly enough and on the mkII I expect it would be amazing. I should add though that I had to get it calibrated by canon as it back focussed initially. A fault I didn't spot until I put it on the 5D.

I've read some really good reviews about it, and it's a lens that I'd use quite a lot with the type of photography I do. Are you on flickr at all?

Yes, but I've not really dived in as such. I got started and then couldn't find enough time to dedicate to keeping it up to date. Most of my better photos I put on my personal website www.neilsampson.co.uk and the exif is in the comments if you want to see what I've used the 24-70 for with my 5D. At that resolution it probably doesn't show you what you want to see though.

Thanks KayJay, appreciate it.

What's your Flickr ID?

yea the Flu has been a right B***** this year!

I've never seen it so bad, and so quickly people can catch it.

Lens wise...
I really want the sigma 120-300mm. (but won't happen for awhile)

only lenses I have are.
Canon 100mm macro.
sigma 30mm 1.4
sigma 70-300mm

I would like a 50mm 1.4.
and not sure what would be best route with this one...

70-200mm 2.8 with 1.4x or the 100-400mm?

I'm tempted more by the 70-200mm as it would be used more.
also...

does the 1.4x work with the Canon 100mm lens?
