Picasa 3?

Aye its a canny wee program, fast, handles RAW fine but sux for editing, I use it as a big notebook of all my shots, careful if you edit with it as it changes the real file.

I use it as a quick way of emailing snaps, and DPP/CS2 for everything else.

anyone used picasa 3? ive just downloaded it and it seems canny.. what do you guys think?

brill...for a freebie...imho easier to use than my ps 2

its been upgraded and does more finer adjustments to processing especially the sharpening

it has some shortcomings but they arent a problem as i swap over to ps or photofiltre to finish off the shot

good archiving...all your shots are there all the time

Picasa doesn't change the original files on my PC. Not that I use it that often, but I use it in work for the very reason that it doesn't alter the original files. You can only see the changes in Picasa (at least on my PC), and any changes can be undone.

I am guessing you can then export the changes you made to a jpg file, like Lightroom does, while leaving the original in tact?

I just downloaded it, mainly as a library viewer for my raw images since it has a much nicer interface than ViewNX.

Does anyone know if there is a shortcut to go from viewing the images in Picasa to editing them in Ps?

yes picassa allows you to restep any pp...and save a copy so that you have an original in picassa as well
it doesnt alter your original on the file or folder you import from
what it does do is store its own shots..and yours...so doubling storage used
i clean out picassa regularly...purely for this
then re import anything needing work done on..assuming the last work is no longer required

Picasa does not change ny file as such, all it does is write a small .ini that details the changes you make and holds this in the same folder that contains the image, something like the one below, it then applies these variables to the image as it displays them. The original raw file is unchanged, so if you view in in another program i.e. CS3 then you will see the imagine as a raw file unaltered. To save the cahnges you make with picasa you need to use the export picture to folder option, then an editted jpeg file is created which is obviously an altered file, your original raw/jpeg or whatever file is unchanged.

The main thing I like about Picasa is the way all you can see all the images displayed and just scroll through them, with most other software you need to do a file/open to view them and then you need to know pretty much what you want to view. Picasa lets you do this right of the bat, then it's just a case of left click with the mouse and choose "locate on disc" if you want to know where it lives on your hard drive...

I agree and I like that you can export your pic to a file and then take off everything that you've added to it and have your original picture
