Pic published

I did it wrong.. well not this bad.. and i got put right.. waaaay before TP or any other forum... the thing that irks is not listening or taking the advice.. just carry on doing it then come back for more advice... ...sigh :(

He who seeks advice most...welcomes it least.

Thank you for your comments, much appreciated by the way! Easy for pro toggers who are established to jump down someones throat but im sure you did exactly the same when you were starting out! I have emailed the paper saying no more unless payment and I am awaiting reply!

They wont pay and clai no budget for such things like photography. now they had a few freebies they will expect more

Happens all over now I'm afraid

You may ave to start somewhere but dont devalue your work at the same time, publications maybe few and far between when requesting payment but they come, it just takes time

You may or may not be right, i cant speak for anyone else, what i do know is that none of the established guys on here blatantly ignored good advice like you have when they first started out

OP asks for advice on pics to papers as one used with no payment

Everyone says dont give for free.... ensuing convo about how papers do and dont pay.. but generally its improved if you dont give for free

OP goes away

OP comes back a little over two months later.. anounces to all same people that he carried on giving pictures for free.. against our advice.. but now fed up.. what should he do..

OP gets lambasted and quite rightly for ignoring original advice

OP starts to cry about the pros being bullies..

pathetic :(

Kevin,
Us "pro" photographers are established because we followed the ethos of not giving our work away for free!.
This advice was passed on to you but you chose to ignore it?, you cannot blame fellow photographers on the TP site for lambasting you when you re-ignite the thread with "I've given more away, but now what should i do now I want paying?".
I didn't chip in on the origional thread as most bases where covered by Tony et al but I now must agree you've made a bed to lie on with this paper!.
I really hope you do get a reply saying "we'll pay" but I doubt it TBH.
Send them an email stating that you "no longer wish to submmit free images & would like some return on your work as they now have seen the quality of your/my submmitance" (I'm hoping there good?). Good luck & don't for a minute blame TP contributers for the replys as you only have youself to blame!. Kind regards Graham.

Graham

The OP has already written to the paper concerned about not submitting any more without getting paid. What we don't know is how the email was worded.

On Saturday Charlton's match with Barnsley was postponed by the ref 2 hours before kick-off.

Action had a few long range shots (after I had mistakenly told them that the ref was doing another pitch inspection at 1pm. Wouldn't have said owt if I'd known the guy was Action), I think one of northern togs had a few and I had loads.

Local paper here which DOESN'T pay for photographs agreed to pay for one. Okay it wasn't a huge sum but they didn't have a free alternative. This paper has a few people who shoot for free for them, but they weren't due to come or were coming later.

I was hoping for coverage in a few papers but it was only The Star on Sunday which did a piece on it and printed one of the pics.

I wrote to them explaining that now that they have had and have used the pics that i sent and they have seen the quality of my work, if they want further pics for publication they will have to pay for them!

apologies to anyone whom i may have cheesed off by submitting pics to the paper but it was never my intention to continue supplying pics for free. My thoughts were a couple of pic to let them see the quality of my work!

Hi Kevin,
you have worded the letter pretty much as I would have.
I do see why you sent in a set of free pics to start with as I'm sure if you'd asked for payment for pics from the onset the Editor would have replyed with "send me some samples of your work" (ie free) or "sorry we don't pay for local football pics", either way your letter should have followed your 1st initial submit! & left at that.

By continuing to send free pics you set out your stall which now results in :-
a, Peeing off your advice givers here on TP &
b, An Editor that will not pay for your images. (he'll take the next free set now anyway).

Stick with it & try to cover games you know are important to the area & the Papers, (staffers can't cover them all). let the Editors know which game you are covering & that the images are available for use at the papers "usual rate".
If they use them then hey, you get paid, if not then hey, you have some nice footy pics :).

Good Luck!. Kind regards Graham.

There will be lots of local sport in your area that staffers cant do.. you get a fantastic celebration or goal or fight even and send it it.. they will want it and they will pay..its a long hard process that probaby does require an element of luck.. I was at a game on sun (for the locl paper) and there was a mass brawl and match abandoned.. if i was at another game (only me does sunday footy for them covering 3 leagues and a lot of games i can only be at one) and you was at the mass brawl then they would have really wanted those pics.. you cant dictate how much you just get standard fee off them as graham says....

Its a myth that papers dont pay.. they do! they choose not to and do wihtout..bog standard action or anything just run of the mill no.. but you get somehting they really really want and they will find the money.. thats every paper in the country IMHO .. its the opposite of what you ahve done.. supply for free and they never pay you... BUT once you get one.. your foots in the door and they know they ahve to pay for anything else..
