Had my first pic published in the ipswich evening star which obviously im over the moon about, however should i be a bit miffed as its only beeen credited as contributed. The team i take the pics for sent in a team photo for the match report from the sunday just gone! not a lot i could do about it but it would have been nice to be credited for it.

They will want them all the time like that Kev, Especially when they are submitted free of charge. lol

Have you got a linky ?

Well done by the way.

Cant find the paper online to be able to get a link!

@MWHCVT
The Star doesn't pay as far as I'm aware,

Hardly any papers want to pay :( didn't stop them charging me over £100 to post a memorial to my mum earlier this year  also hasn't stopped them charging me thousands for adverts over the years  can you tell I'm a little bit jaded, not that I particularly matters as I've no interest in submitting to papers, certain magazines sure I'm considering though :D

Yes they do.. all papers pay.. if they rerally want the picture they do.. however if they ahve a choice and can stick some stock in there or get for free then they wont...

The above is true for a lot of papers.. however theres also enough that will pay.. hence why people like me are still in business :)

Yep, they use iWitness24 Citezen (Photo) Journalism or summit. I'm sure they'd pay for the odd pictyre if it was important enough.

not sure a local rag would pay for non league sunday footie,

Last sunday...

Of course they would, the only time they wont pay is if someone is silly enough to give it away
Archant aren' t like what they use to be. You'll probably right, but it's the way the (Newspaper) industryhas moved on due to technology* c/w digi cameras and now smart phones owned by peeps everywhere... Things were bound to change and unfortunately it may catch on up North soon.

*e.g: less readers of newspapers now that everything can be made available on the net.

.

Does it really effect sport down south like that? I mean how would the above page i posted be replaced? ... as far as i can see its exactly how gary says..

Well, lots of photos say contributed, then there;s this iwitness thingy (http://suffolk.iwitness24.co.uk/ ).
There is talk of making the Ipswich Evening Star DAILY newspaper in to a WEEKLY.

I really dont see how somehting like iwitness is going to effect us all selling football pictures... iwitness type users dont usualy sit in the rain for two hrs.. then edit then give them to somehting like that for free...

Mate, I hope you're right. I don't buy the local paper anymore 'cos quality is no longer there.

As said about technology, there is an increase in free photography for press pics in this digital age/smart phones. The local rag has made redundant all but one I believe of it's staff photogaphers.
Yep, I may be talking out of my arse, but it would be good to hear from other places if similar is happening

Where;s Mark? (@DemiLion). He would give a good POV on this I'm sure (probably based on facts) and if my views and assumptions are wrong then I will apologise.

But be ready with a new business plan just in case.

No your right wiht the bigger picture.. papers are dying slowly and that will effect all photogrpahers one way or another... I just dont think these sites like iwitness will have an immediate effect on such things as football matches... in the long run its all going to end :(

But it will go internet and they will still need pics :)

I hope so Tony, and hope it's pics from proper jobbing photographers like you.

A photo is a photo wether its in print or on the web in fact theres actually more need for photos on the web as it has dynamic content, i would say its equally if not more important to charge for photos used on the web.

The big tabloids are always going to be there i would have thought. Regional papers will proberbly die away and internet newspapers will boom!
Even so, photographs are still needed!

40 quid each web use seems to be the norm.. thing is you can get away with poor pics online as when used 800px for example they then look half decent .. which will breed sloppy photography :(

In SE London where I am the local rags are really poor. Sod all sport.

It's either crime or some hairdresser shop opening..

Was meaning more locals than Nationals mate, if YP commission it can be up to £80 a game, but if they pay on pic usage at £15 per pic then use 10 in an online gallery that's £150 i know its rare they pay per pic over commission but it does happen sometimes, just make sure if you're commissioned that you don't send them enough to make it worthwhile them creating an online gallery

Mate of mine works freelance locally for RIM/Johnstones and he only ever sends 4 pics in for print, if they want an online gallery they then have to ask him for more at £15 each

so if i thought my pics were good enough do i just contact the daily rag and ask if they want them or how does it work?

thanks Gary, need to keep practising and getting cold as it was today.......

I agree. Now though many pics are supplied by peeps with smartphones etc.

Ref iWitness...

I had a chat with one of the chief photographers of an Archant outlet about 18 months ago and his comment at that stage was that it was decent enough for fluffy bunny/wildlife/landscape stuff for fillers and on the spot live witness shots that no snapper will ever get, but apart from that it was a chocolate teapot when it came to filling newsprint.

Otherwise when it comes to local level sports in the South, most local papers are pants. They'll cover if they get free pics or can get a staffer there, otherwise it's a match report probably put together after a quick telephone 'interview' with the team's manager.
Obs that's a sweeping generalisation and a few titles still seem to be paying for ultra local sport, but it's pretty much what seems to be happening now.

It's a bit depressing really.

Eggzachary Mark.

Am I allowed to like your posts

I Liked Mark's post.
Cheers for your input Mark.

Er .. Archant are a nightmare. One publication went from 4 pages of sport to 2, virtually no pics of any consequence and currently devoting a page and a half to one topic and the rest stuffed into half a page. I stopped submitting esp since they seemed to think the team I shoot for isn't of sufficient interest ... defo not offering for free!

I have been fortunate with my local weekly (Newsquest owned). I normally send in on spec & get paid when published. Today I got an email asking if I would cover a particular game for them. I agreed and asked if they would also pay travel costs and they agreed to pay their normal staff rate per mile. Hopefully there will be more to come in the future.

from my experience newsquest are the best regional newspapers to do any work for.. they appreciate good photogrpahy and will pay to get it.. I have found that for any newsquest title accross the country...

i have now had 4 pics published in the ipswich star, should i email to say i can supply more but only if i get paid. yes i shouldnt have sent them in and not get paid! any ideas on how best to approach this?

We gave you all the good advice in Novemeber..yet you ahve carried on giving for free and now you ahve had enough?

I have no more advice for you..

You burnt your bridges now mate, this really p***es me off that despite all the good advice from pro togs on here you go against the advice thinking you know best and send more in for free, i seriously doubt you will ever get paid from here on in as they now expect them for free from you, your only chance is to stop and stop now, make it clear to them no more freebies, you got nothing to lose as you aint been paid so far anyway.

Also mate, the thing with guys like Kev is now then done it the wrong way and are now being chastised for it they wont stop and will now be prepared to do anything, even if that means dropping brown piles of excrement on working togs just to get another pic published.

I give up mate, oh wait a minute, i already did.
