pic opening issue

bit of a techy question this....a friend had her pc repaired and cant open any of her pics now they have all acquired the '.adm. format ending rather than '.jpg.

I have looked and none of my processing software will open then and cant find anything on the internet. :shrug:

Any thoughts and suggestions gratefully received.

I aint a techie, but she could try changing the file on one of her pics back to .jpg and see if it opens then.

.adm is a windows policy template file

Try renaming the file in DOS. Open a command prompt and navigate to the directory in which the files are located.

Type: ren picture.adm picture.jpg (where picture is the name of the file)

Then try opening the file within windows.

I also forgot to mention that you will need to check the default application that jpegs are opened in.

To do this, open Windows Explorer and go to Tools>Folder Options>File Types. Scroll down the list until you find the .jpg and .jpeg extensions and check what application is used to open them by default.

Thanks got a file with a '.jpg' extension now but when I try and open it still no picture...given she had loads of these on her pc shes a tall order to resolve!

On the originals have an '.abm' extension not '.adm' if that helps anyone in solving the issue.

Hmmm. Maybe her camera/image editing software has been naffed up by the repairers. I'd suggest re-installing it. Do a Google for 'abm extension' too - there's a raft of pages about similar problems.

Bad news I'm afraid. Have checked the file you emailed me and it seems to be an album archive, but with no photos inside.

I would suggest your friend contacts the people who did the backup/restore and find out if they actually copied the .jpg files. Otherwise I hope your friend has a CD or DVD backup

just had a quick google. it is probably an archive file - a compressed backup type thing. One suggestion was to change the extension to .txt and open it with notepad. the idea being the name of the creation program needed to unpack it may be visible at the start or end of file.

I did that, no mention of the actual app but it seems to be Arcsoft PhotoImpression so I downloaded a trial version and tried to open the file but it wasn't recognised

The comp has to go back to whoever did the work. This is a backup/compressed file no doubt created by the techy that carried out the work. The trouble is that this file extention is used by many different applications. The techy needs to finish the job he/she started.

And let us know who - so we may avoid.

Thanks all for your comments, I tried the google option and found the txt reference but couldnt see anything about the original prog in there...found something called Konvertor but they wanted money for that that claimed to open most anything....in terms of the repairer somewhere in Essex so I think your be ok in Cheltenham 2blue4u
