I wanted to make this thread because it seems very few people have said things about this common after-market grip found for the 40D. I bought this one a few months ago from the well-known seller from HK. See it here

I packed away my camera since buying it and today was the first time I actually 'used' the grip. Unfortunately, I noticed that the small grey spring-loaded tab found in the compartment drawer that holds down the rightmost battery was not working properly.

When the battery is pressed down, the tab does not hold the battery down in its place. The left battery mechanism works fine but because of this, there is no way for me to use the grip with two batteries.

I just e-mailed the seller inquiring about refunds/replacements. At the moment, I'm not sure what I should do because if he is not charitable enough to send a replacement, I would have to ship the grip to HK, which would require more money on my end. Is it worth it? We'll see. I paid £45 total (shipping was £18).

I wanted to make a thread for future reference in case people wanted to know about potential problems of the grip.

Edit: I had to move last week, and idiot that I was, I threw out the plastic packaging. I wonder if that'll be a problem.

I stopped dealing with that seller because their after sales service is very poor. I'd be very surprised if they send you another grip/refund without returning the original.

Tbh, I would dispute the payment with Paypal rather than fighting with the seller and let Paypal sort it out....

Ah. Hmm. How effective would it be for me to go through Paypal? Are they generally good with refunding things like this? I thought Paypal dealt more with cases like scams or the like.

I have nothing but praise for my phottix grip. That said, the mechanism for the right battery holder seems a little weak on mine too.

Seems to me its an easy thing to bodge a fix for possibilities include a small wedge above the battery or padding the door on that side so that the battery is pushed into place once the battery door is closed.

As for after market service - I've never needed it sorry.

Good luck

Well, the goods aren't fit for purpose, so it's worth a try, but it sounds as if it would be easier just to try and sort it or rig something up yourself to make it work, rather than going through all the hassle...

Yes, it probably wouldn't be hard to come up with a 'fix'. But of course I'd like to explore all my options. Worst comes to worst, I'll use a DIY solution, but optimally, I'd like a new one (duh).

My aftermarket D70 one suffers from a similar problem, although in it's case the batteries fit in-line, but a single battery won't click into place, meaning you have to use two or it won't work at all. I couldn't be bothered sending it back....

I've got the same grip from the same supplier, so far it's ok.

The way I look at buying cheap stuff from HK is to regard it as buying second hand. If it works then excellent, if it doesn't,

Still ****** me off when it doesn't work though :D
