Where do you buy it from? And is it worth having PaintShopPro too, when I just want do a basic crop?

If all you want is a crop then photoshop will do the trick. but your needs will change over time and the difference in price between photoshop and elements 5 isn't much.

worth checking out kelkoo.co.uk for a price search if you want to buy online. OIf you prefer to but from a shop, somewhere like pc world or John lewis maybe a starting point.
 
my unprofessional opinion is to get Adobe Lighroom!, absolutely fantastic
 
Photoshop can be bought from most PC stores and photography shops and if you google for photoshop you'll find masses of online retailers selling it.

For just cropping an image, photoshop is a little OTT, but i'm sure you'll end up using it's many other features during the course of your photography post prosessing activities.

Never used paint shop pro :(
 
I don't process my pictures, hence me thinking Paint Shop Pro would be enough, as it's only really the cropping I'm interested in.
I can adjust saturation and contrast and whatnot on the software that came with my camera (350d).

Paint Shop Pro will do 95% of what Photoshop can do, and it's on offer right now for around £60 for the full version.

I'm not knocking PS - it's a great application (at a high price!) - but you may find that PSP does everything you need and more, and the learning curve isn't as steep. Make sure you upgrade the the latest version of PSP XI - the earlier ones were buggy. :)
 
If your not interested in much post processing then try the Trial of Adobe lightroom, has basic adjustments, stores all your photo's similar to googles picasa etc and I find the croping easier to use than photoshop (there is probably something similar in PS but I'm just a beginner so prefer the light room way)
 
if your just doing simple crops then microsoft office picture manager does it and you may have that already
 
I shall have a look on my computer. Been looking online and Photoshop is way too expensive, especially when I consider that I won't really use it.

Lightroom is fine for RAW conversion but it lacks many of the features of a full-blown image editor, including layers support, perspective correction, selective adjustments, etc. It may evolve into a complete package, but for now I think you still need stage two. ;)

For an all-in-one application it's worth trying Bibble which, with a few plugins (free or cheap), can do almost everything, and removes the need for second-stage processing with many shots. Versions are available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

The Faststone Viewer is really neat and allows cropping, resizing, etc, as well as some other basic adjustments.
 
Ha ha how dumb am I? I can crop using ZoomBrowser EX, some software that came with the camera. How silly do I feel lol.

I cannot believe no-one has recommended Elements 5 ... :eek: ... it is out of the same stable as Photoshop and is really a cut down but pretty damn comprehensive version of the professional Photoshop package from a much more user friendly and useful 'beginner' right up to 'non-professional' user perspective ... imgo ... :thumbs:

You will in all probability and very soon want to do more with your pictures than just cropping ... Elements 5 provides very good filing and accessibility options as well as a superb set of tools and comprehensive functionality aligned to Photoshop ... but at a fraction of the price ... :D


Give it a go ... it is available as a free trial download from Adobe direct ... ;) ... if you don't like you don't pay ... :shrug:

I made a hint about it, but had I known you would be posting I would of made it Green, after all I am unsure if black text is even visable to you!

I might start a mass debate now lol.. but I don't think I will want to do anything else other than crop, I'm happy with my pictures 80% of the time, so I either crop if needs be or leave them alone.

dont take this the wrong way confusedchicca but most photos benifit from some tweeking afterwards, even if its just adjusting the levels,contrast or saturation. i didnt belive it could make so much of a difference till my mate showed me how to do it. it may just make the difference between having a good photo and a great photo,

I'm not saying it doesn't, it's just not something I choose to do. This may well change at some point, but even then I can't see me tweaking many pictures. My main bugbear is when I get an awesome (clubbing) picture, people immediately assume I've PS'd it, and it seems to become about the process rather than the picture, if that makes sense?

yeah, i get your point you cant make a poorly taken pic into a good one with PS, the better the pics you take with the camera and the less you need to do in ps the better in my opnion.
i was meaning dont rule it out, and just cos people assume you PS it don't mean its bad. :)
 
From my own experience I have PSP 9. It is really good for creating imaes, posters, editing and creating photo artwork. It also does the basic cropping and colour saturation etc.... It is really reliable too but I am thiking it is not really a 'photographer's option...

I use it for webpages, creating logos, templates and alot of ebay stuff. If you're posting up your pics online it has great compression software built in but if all you need are the basic tools then as these guys say you don't even need to go to the expense of PSP
 
If you only want to do basic crops then Picassa is a free download and will crop just fine
