My 13 year old son has just bought his first SLR camera and is learning how to crop/edit photos eg making them black and white etc. A friend has recommended CS4 as an editing tool, my concern is that this might be too technical for him, any advice? Thanks

Photoshop can be daunting at first but it's no harder to use than any other software really. There are loads of easy to follow tutorials out there and kids pick stuff up very quickly; I'd say 'go for it' :)

If you want a free alternative, 'GIMP' does much of the same? And it doesn't involve spending a few hundred quid. Or failing that, how about photoshop elements? Most of the functionality that people use day-to-day, but for a tiny fraction of the price!

I'd start with Picasa3, which is free, and allows basic editing without fear of damaging the original file. If you find you need more processing options or find Picasa too limiting, then maybe Gimp which has been mentioned, or Paint.Net which are both free.

The benefit of Photoshop Elements is that it is close to the full Photoshop, which means that there are lots of tutorials online. It does cost money though, though nowhere near the cost of the full Photoshop CS(whatever)

Photoshop CS* could possibly be too technical, but he may be able to pick it up, being young, and therefore a sponge ;) where learning stuff goes, but as long as he wasn't put off by the complexity, it is obviously a program to grow into.

Sorry, double posted...

I don't think he should go for photoshop just yet. He may take a few pics and decide that photography isnt for him and just starting out it would be a high price to pay just to do some editing. I suggest walking before trying to run. Get a couple free programs first...

Hi,

I completely agree about Elements  I have PSE8 and it's brilliant. Much cheaper and does everything and more I could possibly need - yet!

However, to answer your question, it is my 16 year old nephew who has taught me how to use it  He was given a copy of Photoshop and has been using it for nearly 3 years now!

Liz
