Photoshop quick selection tool

Hi all,
Can anyone help? I'm a complete newbie to Photoshop, as I use LR6 all the time. I want to start to learn Photoshop, as I am interested in changing backgrounds, especially black for equine shoots. My problem is this. No mater how slowly or carefully I go, when selecting the horse, the selection will jump to select the edges of the picture, and not the silhouette of the horse. Where am I going wrong? It's infuriating! LR seems so intuitive to me whereas PS seems to go out of it's way to be difficult! (Obviously I know this isn't the case, but it feels like it!

Any advice would be ore than welcome.

I use PaintShop not Photoshop, however.........if the subject is not defined enough against the background that can cause a problem with selection tools, or there may be some settings for the tool that need adjusting. Can you find something sharply defined in edge and colour to test it against?

Make sure you are on the layer with the horse.... not on another layer above/below, and not on a layer mask.
