Is there a way of converting RAW files to jpeg files in Photoshop Elements?

When I try to open a RAW file atm, I keep getting a message saying "Could not process request because photoshop does not recognise this type of file"

Yesterday I got round this by converting the files using Digital Photo Professional but I'm wondering if there is an easier way.

However, when I went to open the converted jpeg file in adobe I was able to select the open as camera RAW option - very confusing to this photoshop newbie.

BTW I've only ever used iPhoto to edit before so I'm very new to this.
:help:

What camera is it? What version of PSE do you have?

I think later versions of Canon RAW i.e. 50D are only supported in PSE version 6, CS4 or Lightroom 2. If you have one of these then you download the latest ACR from the Adobe website. Otherwise you might have to convert to DNG or use DPP.

As freester says those updates will only work in the newer versions, they are not compatable with the earlier versions.
Edit, you should be ok with the updats in that version.

I'm using a Canon 50D and have PSE 6 so I'll try out the update.

Yes it's a little misleading whether the latest ACR will work with PSE6 but I think it will. Make sure you follow the instructions and save the old file in case you need to revert back.

I have a 50d and elements 7. I have since downloaded ACR version 5.4 in an attempt to get PSE to open my RAW files without having to go directly to DPP. However, PSE simply will not open my RAW files stating that.CR2 is the wrong type of file. This is driving me nuts. Can anyone please help?

After you downloaded Adobe Camera RAW, did you follow the instructions on the Adobe website? You have to copy the new files into the Photoshop elements directory so it will use the latest version of Adobe Camera RAW.
