Hi folks

Quick query that I thought was beter suited here rather than in the 'processing forum'

I have just bought Photoshop Elements 5.0, installed it etc and had a bit of a play around (pre-instructions obviously)
I have found though that its seems a very very slow programme to use.

Now have others found this to be the case, or is it my PC? It does only have 512 RAM.
So could that be the issue and I need more memory - or is Elements just plain slow?

Hi there
You may find that it is your computer......
You haven't said the size of the hard drive, but it needs more
memory to run.......have a look at this site
http://www.offtek.co.uk - they are specialized in memories for computers....
good luck

Hard drive is plenty big enough. Its a 160gb hard drive with still about 100gb unused.

So probably need more memory then. Its currently 512. What would you suggest I really need - 1gb or maybe 2gb ?

You can never have enough memory, though XP only supports up to 4Gb and you will need to check how much your motherboard supports.

2Gb got to be the minimum these days.

yeah I have noticed that most decent new PCs seem to be coming with minimum 2gb ram.

With that upgraded memory, you reckon photoshop elements should be very much quicker then ?

It should be, I run it with 2GB of RAM. However, what speed is the processor in your PC too?

512mb:eek: defo more RAM.

Processor is AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+

PC is 2.5 - 3yrs old
You reckon upgrading the RAM will make all the difference. Or reckon pC is just a bit outdated now?

It is a little outdated, but not too much.
I have a machine with an Athlon 64 3000+, 3 GB of RAM, nVidia 6800LE and most things I need work fairly speedily. Although I could use more cores for better multitasking and image editing.
However, I don't use Photoshop Elements, I use the GIMP with either UFRaw or RawTherapee, I'm not quite sure how Elements compare to the GIMP speed-wise, it was some time ago I've tried it.

hummmm think Im caught between the two options of upgrading PC, or biting bullet and flogging this one and buying another.

Am sure this has only a 128 graphics card as well, which doesnt sound too great.
So need more RAM, better graphics card, ideally faster processor.

Might be time to have a quick scan at what PCs are going for these days

You don't need a faster graphics card for image editing. If you were into 3D modeling, that would be a different matter.

I don't think you'll get a faster processor for that socket (which could be either 939 or 754). Maybe a second hand one, but I'm not sure whether that would be a safe bet.

More memory should help, especially if you deal with larger images.

When I first got Elements 5 I was running it on 512mb and it was so slow I could ask it to do something then make a cup of tea while I waited:lol:

Upped the memory to 2gb and it won't even give me chance to grab a sip of my tea now:thumbs:

Cheers for all your help fellas.

Eric Mc - that is just how slow my Elements is.
Think a memory upgrade should do the trick.
Many thanks everyone :)
