Hi Guys,

I'm starting a full time college course in August and a mate of mine has offered to install a full version of Photoshop CS5 for me. I know nothing about editing apart from cropping and the odd black and white conversion and was wondering should I be looking at a newer piece of software or will this program still be more than enough for me whilst i'm learning. Also does anyone have particular advice regarding what tutorials to watch as I was thinking of simply watching as many as possible in youtube.

Since some time already, Affinity Photo is available for Mac!
If your not, they foresee the publication for the end of September.

I use it with the greatest pleasure because it performs fantastically
and it is not an Adobe product but a Serif product (made in the UK!)
 
I am using windows 10 but i'll certainly keep an eye out. I had never heard of this mainly Lightroom, Photoshop and Elements. The end of September might be an issue though as I will be a month into this course.
 
Cs5 will certainly do all you need for some time and if someone is offering to install full program snap it up!
 
You say 'install'. Is that gratis or is it costing you?

Bear in mind that if you are going to be a full time student you will qualify for preferential pricing anyway.

There won't be a lot of difference in Adobe versions, but just be aware that your tutor is likely to be expecting everyone to be on the same programme and version, so depending on how much is expected of you, some items in the current version of Adobe cc will differ slightly.

Ask the college which programmes they use or expect.

There is little point at this stage having a totally different software installed as it will make the learning curve that much more difficult.

(And if they are using Adobe cc, this automatically update to the most recent version anyway).

It's not costing me mate. He's a bit of a computer guy and he's told me he's got the program so he's going to install it for free. I imagine that the lecturer will want us using similar programs but I can't get in touch with them till 15th August so if this is not suitable i'll purchase something else.

I'll certainly check out the newer stuff too mentioned above.

I wish I'd taken more of an interest in this stuff now though as it's quite daunting never having worked with it.
 
Great. Adobe for free!

Loads of tutorial stuff for Adobe on YouTube. As far as 'newer' stuff is concerned, Adobe CS5 advanced to CS6, before Adobe withdrew all boxed versions and went for the subscription model called Creative Cloud or 'CC'. Hence the reason why it automatically updates. The softwares mentioned by Kodiak Qc are from competing vendors and have differing layouts and whilst I would be tempted to agree that some elements are an improvement, you would be better learning what has become the industry standard, before venturing off into competing softwares that your tutor may not cover.
 
Just be a bit careful, you can install CS5 legally on two machines but only use it one at once.
The program dials home every so often to check it is legal ( if its like CC it does that every 30 days and if it is not legal I think it stops working-but I could be wrong on that), so if your mate is not using it at all you could transfer the licence.
Rather surprisingly the Adobe Photography bit ( PS and Lightroom) of Adobe CC is the same price whether you are a student or not.
Like Shreds says check with the college first

Just make sure your mate deactivates it on his computer(s) before he installs it on yours if he has not already done so.

Cheers mate. I don't think he ever had it on his computer.
 
You could also consider Photoline as an addition. It costs EUR59.00 and (to my eyes at least) is incredibly powerful. It's a full-feature image editing programme which is regularly updated.

No worries. I use both Photoline and PS depending on what I want to do or depending on which way of performing a certain action I prefer.
 
A large part of CS5 is much the same as the latest version so a good way to get started.
