Photoshop CS5 prices!!

I was just wondering if anyone is going to buy the new Photoshop CS5 as I've just been looking into the price and I was surprised at how high they are.
I normally get a copy through work but we probably won’t be upgrading to CS5 this year so I’m going to have to buy it myself this year.
I’m lucky in that I qualify for the Student and Teacher Edition of Photoshop CS5 Extended which is only £186.82 this is considerably better than the asking price of £932!!! I think the non extended version is £643.90 :ohmy:
I often wonder if they made the prices more accessible to people if they would sell more copies and thus reduce the inevitable piracy of their software.
 
I think I'll be sticking with CS4 for the time being.
 
You could buy a PC or laptop for those prices. No wonder there are so many unregistered copies floating around of previous versions
 
I love they charge you £20 more to download it too - how is them sending you a box £20 cheaper? :|
 
Just upgraded at work to CS4 as it was a good deal so I can't see us getting CS5 yet.
 
but surely if you have a legit copy of CS3 / CS4 then the upgrade is a fraction of the buy it here now new software price...........

Some of the stuff it looks like it can do is amazing though - no need ofr any more crap pics... ever! :lol:

I've just had a look at the upgrade prices and assuming they are correct which they should be as it was from adobe uk they are a bit steep as well.

Standard down from £643.90 to £549.90
Extended down from £932 to £904.75 which doesn't seem worth upgrading!!

That's the price to upgrade from Elements :)

To upgrade from CS3/CS4 to CS5 the Adobe UK site quotes £326 inc vat

Regards the student version, anyone with a kid at school could legitimately buy it for them (for non commercial use). The master collection - that is ALL the software is only £576! I think my step son might want it for his birthday :)

Ps full version is only £186 for a student!!

give it 3 months and serif will have their own version on the shelves for about £120, but with special staff discount and managers offers for that day only you will get it for £60:D

I thought that seemed too high to be an upgrade from photoshop. I've just checked again and as you say the extended upgrade is £326 and the Standard is £186.
Just spoke to my brother and he seems to think that his son will be wanting a copy as well!!
I qualify for a copy as I teach in an HE college and like you I am tempted by the Master version :clap:

i was thinking the same. i cant see the amount of pirated copies of CS going down any time soon at that price.

i asked that not so long ago, its something to do with where the download servers are hosted and tax.

You have to wonder how much development costs go into the latest version, many of the features probably haven't changed in years, give some new cosmetic tweaks and kerching!

Simple answer is vote with your wallet and buy alternatives, if you keep re-inforcing the monopoly nothing will change.

The new content aware button looks like it'll transform crap photos into really good ones with the click of a button.
 
How much will it cost to upgrade from an educational copy cs4 to and educational copy cs5?

I do an evening photography course at a local college, which happens to also offer degrees so I qualify for the Adobe student discount. I'd read somewhere that you can upgrade a student copy (£189) to a full on CS5 for a further £189 or something which still works out cheaper. :thinking: So I had the following conversation via their online chat with them on Monday:

Me: Hello! I have a question about upgrading from CS5 Student and Teacher edition to the full commerical-use version
Adobe representative: I understand that you wish to know the cost for upgrading to the commercial use, am I correct?
Adobe representative: You can use this educational version for the commercial purposes now also you don't have to pay any thing for this.
Me: This applies to the CS5 version? As the old CS4 version I thought was personal use only..
Me: The US version allows commercial use though, however I am wanting the UK version!
Adobe representative: Yes, that's right this is applicable for the both version.
Adobe representative: I hope I had resolved your issue.
Adobe representative: I am happy to help you, is there anything else I may assist you with today?
Me: So if I buy the student and teacher version (I am currently a student, obviously!) it is okay to use it for commercial purposes? Just want to double-check as really don't want to be doing the wrong thing!
Adobe representative: Yes, you can use it 100% for the commercial purposes after waards.

Looks like the student edition now IS usable for commercial use then! Just like in the US! :thumbs:

So I have it in writing if the piracy squad come after me that I am using it in good faith.. I'm curious to see if anyone else has a similar result as it seems too good to be true, even if the US versions have always been that way! It doesn't say anywhere on their website that you can't use it for commercial use now either.. I'm sure it used to with CS4 which *was* non-commercial use only.

Photoshop and Illustrator are best-in-breed, industry strength, world leading applications. Most people who complain about the pricing are either unaware of the power and breadth of the software, unaware of the technological achievements behind it, or both :)

It's developed by large teams of incredibly skilled people, backed by lengthy research conducted by more teams of equally skilled and incredibly intelligent people. Considering the technical complexity of the product it even manages to execute all of this relatively bug free (Nobody is perfect, but I've used FAR worse software in my time).

For what they're selling, the price to me seems more than fair. People happily pay out £3,500 to have a new bathroom installed and believe me, Photoshop involves a hell of a lot more work than that, AND won't go mouldy if you don't install it right :D

im aware of how much arse ache CS4 is giving us at work.. does that count?
 
I'll be updating my design bundle that's for sure, well when I say I... I mean my company :D

I've had major issues with cs4 stability so this better be a damned site better
 
I've just ordered my copy & for the first time ever Adobe UK have honoured the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) discount that's a real first. Saved myself a nice few pounds there.

Heh! Thanks for posting that - it definitely didn't say that on Monday as I triple-checked! That's a relief; I mean, I know I had it in writing from the transcript but I still couldn't quite believe it..

Have pre-ordered through Amazon so I can get extra Nectar points.. why not save even more.. a whole 50p off in Sainsburys :lol:
 
Academia.co.uk are listing CS4 with FREE upgrade to CS5 now at £270 for the Design Premium pack.

I will probably get it in Julyish...... Really like some of the new features. I didn't buy the design pack for CS4 just photoshop keeping CS3 running and having looked into it I was toying with the idea of doing that again but by then I will have made up my mind.

it may surprise you to know that its not a free country, as 1 of the names over the door, if we are seen to be condoning or supporting illegal activity then we can be booted off the server, served legally or be forced to watch fluffy kittens die. Its up to us to make sure we are not liable for any of the above, so we make and enforce the rules accordingly. In the rules you will also find some info about querying staff decisions, perhaps a quick re-read might help.

Oh I just wait until it's offered to me at a real knock down price.

All you need to do is download the free serif photo plus offers on their website and you're on their special offer list (if you want to be) - It's saved me a lot of money in the past.

But how many people actually use all that power - and if it's so good why are there so many plug ins?

I have tried trial versions of PS in the past and for the money they wanted I definitely wasn't impressed.

For instance their noise reducion was rubbish so I bought the stand alone version of Neat Image.

If all you want to do is reduce noise in an image you made a good decision.

But that is not all that is generally required on an image and the power of photoshop cannot be denied.
 
£900+ for a program... As previously said this is why piracy goes on! All too easy to do these days as well :(

A program suite like CS5 takes as much development as a piece of hardware. How much is a 600mm Nikon lens and how much are the actual raw materials worth? I bet there is a lot more profit in that lens than in the software :)

I don't disagree! But it's the fact that something you can get for one click of the mouse, you are paying as much for as you would a nice shiny new camera! If you could get a rip off 5D with a click of a mouse, I think more people would be inclined to do it :cuckoo:

I doubt that very much.

Each lens has to be individually made - create a program and the same program can be sold a million times.

Once you've recouped the development costs and the running costs of the company the rest is profit.

Look at Windows.

How much profit do you think Nikon make from a 600mm lens, £1000+ ?? Software costing less than a £1000...... I wasn't talking percentages.
 
Out of interest, what would be the license position with student edition software, if I use it, but I am not the licensee? Say, my other half (NUS pass) or my nephew (school) were to purchase it?
