Yes
I have a copy of PS CS3 which was given to me and it's now a bit out of date, for instance I can't use the RAW files from my 7D as it won't support the latest ACR update. So, I need to upgrade, but CS5 is a lot of money, like over £600!

I'm not a very advanced user of PS, typically I tend to sharpen, resize, adjustments such as curves, contrast, saturation etc, and also use gaussian & surface blur to some extent. Will I lose/miss anything by going to Elements 9 ?

Nope...

:agree:

The only thing I found it lacking was layer masks, but there are plug-ins available that sort that issue out.

Completely O/T, but I think I've got your old 50D Jelster/Steve. It had your name in the photos' exif data when I first started using it. :D

Actually, from what I read today, it looks like layer masks are included in version 9.

Look after that camera buddy, I took some of my best shots with that :D

Ah, there we go then. I'm only using 8 at the moment. It seemed like a silly omission to me.

I've taken some of my best shots with it too. :D

You can still use CS3 by using the free DNG converter to convert the 7d images to DNG first, it is an extra step in the workflow but it's quick and easy to do.

Have you considered Lightroom?
I've also got a 7D and I used to use Elements and CS3 but since switching to Lightroom I haven't touched Photoshop. However I've just tried the 'edit in CS3' option from Lightroom and it has opened the file in CS3 as a 16bit TIFF file.
I'd certainly suggest having a look at it.

Lightroom's a good suggestion :)

I have LR2, I need something more, that gives me layers etc. LR is good for basic stuff, but there is no way to only PP certain parts of the image you're working on.

Steve

LR3 you can paint in areas of changes using the adjustment brush. It isn't as flexible as PSs layer masks, but allows you to only apply a process to an area of the image.

Lightroom isn't really a replacment for photoshop.
No, but if you can do 99% of your adjustments in LR and only drop out the last 1% to PS via TIFF, all the OP needs to do is buy LR which is a far better way of manipulating for most of the time...

He/she doesn't need to buy Lightroom when the software they have will already do what they want, all they need to do is convert the raw and do it in CS3, camera raw has most of lightrooms tools (and the converter is free)

Right, I HAVE LR2 and I already have sorted a workflow to import the RAW files and then Export them as DNG's, but I want the ability to use a number of the functions that I can in CS3. I should of also explained, the copy of CS3 I have is on my Windows Laptop, and I'm currently running LR2 on my iMac, so I also want to run PS on the Mac as well.

I have now downloaded the trial and I'm having a play with it right now. I don't like the layout, but I guess it's just a case of getting used to it and learning where everything is.
