I usually make borders by changing the canvas size with Black and white extension canvas. Today, for some reason the "canvas extension color" is greyed out.

I am probably being thick but any idea why?

It's a Monday thing.
.. I'm habving one of those days too .... buuhh:(

utterly baffled....... never seen that before. Not sure if it woul dmake a difference, but is your background layer locked? (only thing i can think of!!)

It will work in any bit mode, like jonnyreb said background locked or is the file open in another application.

Actually scratch that, Ive just tried it with all modes, from Bitmap through to CMYK etc, and it still works on mine.

Thanks for the suggestions. Layer is not locked and the images are not being used elsewhere. I did have ligthroom open but closing that makes no difference. Here is a screen grab

erm - having values set at zero?? or does it stay greyed out when values added.

Brain starting to hurt!

Aha! It's because you only have the one background layer and its unlocked.

Lock the layer, and it will ungrey :)

its because you have made the background into an adjustment layer and have no background, using history go back to where you changed the layer to layer 0, and it will revert to background then you can adjust the canvas size.

Hmm - reboot?

Seriously, can't think of anything that could be causing this!! I have had some issues with CS3 doing strange things - not locking but 'flashing'. That was in the Beta phase......

Sorry mate - hope it sorts itself out!

That's, er, what I meant...I think :D

That's what I noticed, so I fired up a new image, unlocked the background layer, and hey presto, I couldn't change the canvas extension colour (like you), so assumed it was just because it was unlocked).

I think it's because there is no actual background layer.

I have clsoed the file and reopened it and so the history has gone. I tried rebooting and the copying the layer and deleting the original and that didn't work. CS2 gives the same problem...

It's because to increase the canvas with a colour, you need a background layer.
When you unlocked it, you turned the background layer into an, er, nonbackground layer.

Flattening it, recreated the background layer (thus giving you a canvas to give colour to), hence why you couldn't give it a colour before...There was nothing to give colour to.

Love that task bar in your screen grab...

How many icons..
