Hi All

Some advice/expertise on Photoshop required please. There must be a way in Photoshop to do what I want, but I can't seem to figure it out.

How do I lighten only those areas of the page that are lighter or the same colour as the currently selected brush colour...?

So... let's say I have a picture of someone against a light background which I want to be 020202, and I want everything on the page that is say... 040404 or lighter - to be whitened or made lighter i.e. the same as or lighter than 040404.

I want to be able to select a large brush tool, make the brush colour 020202, and then paint anywhere on the page, but only those colours that are lighter than the brush colour are affected and thus lightened.

How do I do this please...? surely in Photoshop there's a way...?

is it not possible to mask 'similar' colours/shades?

 dunno sorry!! hence asking this question.

I'm not too skilled in Photoshop (as you can tell), so I have no idea (1) how to do what I have asked, nor (2) if there's a better way to accomplish this.

Any ideas...?

Blind leading the blind here then, I don't even have it :)

A quick try in Elements masking tools shows the "Magic Selection Brush Tool" which can be set to select all pixels of a certain colour?

Hi Musicman

Not sure if I understand you right, but if you try this it might help:
1. dulpicate your layer and set the blending mode to screen.
2. apply a mask and fill it with black
3. then with a brush using white as your foreground colour, paint over the areas you want to lighten.
ps: if its too bright just lower your opacity to suit.
