Photoshop CC newbie confused by ACR settings

Just downloaded the trial of Photoshop CC.

In ACR with elements 9 it used to show my RAW files as 16bit automatically at the bottom of the image.

Now it shows the file as Adobe RBG and 8 bit. In preferences I can set a custom profile with 16 bit selected, do I change the colour space to sRGB - which I always work in - or am I getting confused?

Does colour space only matter outside of RAW after I open the image in Photoshop?

Help!

Raw files do sort of have a colour space, but photoshop doesn't see it, so you need to assign the space of your choice at the acr stage.

Photoshop ( and Lightroom) import files into Adobe' very very large colour space ( called MellisaRGB if you wanted to know) It's the default colour space they use. You then have to choose which colour space you want to output to . Whilst you are using ACR the file stays in this very very large colour space, and the image is edited in 16 bit. However once edited it then need to go into the real world, so to speak. Hence the options to use AdobeRGB or sRGB. If you currently use 8 bit sRGB then that's fine as it will be OK for 95%+ of what you need.

Thanks everyone, have set sRGB 16 bit as custom preset.
