quick question.is there any alternative software to photoshop.if so what are they?i find photoshop a bit expensive for a beginner.thanks in advance
 
Another vote for Photoshop Elements. Cut down version of Photoshop, but easier to manage and a lot lot cheaper.
 
A couple that aren't in that thread and worth a try.

Phocus from Hasselblad its free but you do need to register to download it. Not really tried it but has pro capabilities.

Helicon Filter Free thirty day trail and a variety of licencing but none to expensive.

I find Helicon filter really easy to use and simple of the few things I want to do with digitail pics sadly it doesn't suport the huge files you get from LF film scans.

onOne Perfect Photo Suite 7......I was very impressed with it when I saw it yesterday at the Photovision Roadshow.
As an example, adding a new background behind say a tree was simply done so flowing hair would be no problem
