Yes
I'm quite a keen sports photographer and have been asked for copies of my photo's before. Sometimes at car events they are fellow owners so no problem, similar with the football team I photograph. Sometimes I've organised the prints and sent them, for the price of a pint.

I've also donated photo's to our clubs website for advertising events, but these are usually the lower res versions.

This time I've been asked for photo's for the website & they've slipped in a possible calendar usage and asked for hi-res versions.

So part of me is thinking if they are making money maybe I should have some of it? Is this wrong? After all I've just invested in upgrading my body/lenses. A little payback would help the justification with my wife.

Not really being in this position before, I'm not quite sure how to word it...

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Hi Byker, I do a lot of sports photography mainly motocross and sell images from my own website and also sell prints at race events. However, when I first started off I quickly realised you need to get your name and rep banded around a bit so I have given away quite a few freebies and also provided a lot of shots to clubs for promotional purposes and race reports etc.

The way I look at it is that I already have my kit so a few give aways are no extra cost to me and the returns from the extra publicity have proven to be very good. I certainly would have been pleased to be published in a specialist calender where people can be reminded of who shot the pics on an almost daily basis. Just make sure they put a good sized acknowlegement to the photographer.

Thanks

I'm not really looking to make this into anything rather than a hobby.

I guess first thing is to ask how many calendars they hope to sell. If a small amount then credit and a free copy or two would be nice :D

Just don't fancy anyone making a fortune without me :)

In which case you could always ask for a small percentage of the sales.
True, the issue though is how do you really know how many have been sold and how do you manage it.

I'd rather just give them a straight price depending on the volume they think they're going to move.

Is they are using your pictures in a commercial way then you really must charge them a fee. How much is up to you - but if they want the pics they will pay. Every time an amateur photographer gives pictures away for free it makes life much harder for pro photographers.

Equally, how you do you their estimated number of sales is even remotely accurate?

Swings and roundabouts....

True again ;) No easy solution really is there :)

I do nightclub photography, and it's taking off quite quickly for me. Repeat bookings, being asked for copies of prints (I send them a hi res copy via email, with my name/MySpace address on it.. that way my name is seen. Free to promoters or DJs, small charge for other people).

I'm at the point now where I need to draw up a contract between myself and promoters, as they'll be paying me and they want all the photos on CD (I don't know whether to watermark these or get credit on the sites they're used on) after the event.
Is there anywhere to get templates of contracts from?
