One of my vehicles in my wholesale business went on fire last night. It was loaded ready for a run and was plugged into one our external power supplies to run the fridge.

The fire brigade alerted us to their call out as the unit was unmanned (1am this morning) and by the time they were finished they had dismantled part of our building as they needed to check our insulated panels were not burning "inside".

We lost; two compressors powering our internal fridges, air compressor and receiver, two compactors, one transit van (chassis melted!), a few square meters of tarmac and a few power and computer cables.

Cause seems to be an electrical fault on recently inspected equipment!

Luckily no-one was hurt and but for our mystery witness who reported it to the FB we would have lost two warehouses, stock and much more.

I called my insurance broker (Giles insurance) at 8.50am and a rep was on site by 9.30. Vehicle was away by 11. Building secure by 11.30! Doors refitted by 1pm (Had to be opened with power off).

I am one who often laments the drop in standards of service. Today I have been amazed by the many companies and services that helped my business continue to trade virtually unaffected by what could have been a disaster. Thanks to them all!

Wow. That is amazing (in a bad way). I'm happy that everyone did there job and you were able to get back to business asap. I really have a fear of burning (may have been a heretic in my last life or something) and those pics make me shudder.

What have you done to that poor Transit :(

Hope everything goes ok with the insurance.

Is that fireproof fruit and veg? or did the firemen empty the van?

Looks bad - but glad you havent had to suffer too badly from it.

Not good Gary but thankfully it wasn't worse and nobody has been hurt.

Can you not sell some of the stock as 'griddled vegetables' to a poncy restaurant? :D ;)

LOL @ Hacker - yeah, smoked veggies could be all the rage next week!

Seriously though - sorry to hear what happened but like you say with all the people stepping in and getting their acts together it seems that maybe it's not quite so disastrous after all that. not sure the redesign on that transit works though - looks a bit too low-slung to me now! ;)

Hope everything continues to get sorted out as smoothly for you.

Thank goodness you were properly insured. Had my surery demolished by the guy upstairs failing to connect mains water. insurers were great and fair and had help for all around - all over the easter bank-holiday.

Hope you soon get sorted and back up and running as normal.

Hope you pull through this with aplomb. Nasty bit of "luck" you've had.

Fingers crossed that the insurance kicks in OK

Ouch! as you say it could have been worse though better if it hadn't happened.

bright side, a new line in pre-barbecued veg?

Sorry to hear the tale of woe Gary but glad to hear that you got some decent service and everyone did what they had to to keep you running.

Feel for you there mate :(

It must of gotten extremely hot to bend the chassis of the transit like that (dont see that too often)

As others have said you have alot to be thankful for in that nobody (including yourself) was injured or worse :(

Hope things continue to move as swiftly as they have started in the rebuild etc etc :)

Thanks everyone for the kind words of support.

Colin we had baked tatties, griddled veggies and glace melons!

There are indentations in the tar next to the van where a couple of trolleys were. They melted into the tarmac! Part of the chassis is still stuck in the tarmac!

Getting my fridges running is the next important part. Engineers arrive Monday a.m. Luckily it was not my dairy fridges which are in another building. The veg will hold given the cold temperatures at the moment! :D

Ouch, at least nobody was hurt

My (now ex) business lost a lot of money over a fire near the works a few years ago. The one where a lot of the Saatchi collection including Tracey Emmens tent went up in flames at Momart fine art storage.

It was 100 yards from our premises but we were excluded due to risk of exploding gas cylinders. Once that was given the all clear we couldn't work work for the rest of the week as the gas supply went through the burnt out site and had been cut off.

Our insurance would not cover any of it as we had no damage. Sorry to hear of your troubles and hope your claim is as straightforward as it seems.

So sorry to hear of your misfortune. As others have said, thankfully no-one was hurt
