Hi All,

I have not been around the forums for a while, but I am in a huge dilema right now!

My laptop had to be sent away to get repaired over the weekend, and I received it back today.

I backed up all my photos to my external hard drive.

Today I was accessing pictures from the external hard drive, and even copied a folder back to my laptop.

However, I turned my external hard drive back on, to find that there are NO files in ANY OF THE FOLDERS ANY MORE.... there are just lots and lots of folders such as:

2008 --> Jan / Feb / March

But NOTHING inside.

This is most odd!

Do you know of any programs that can scan the hard drive for deleted files?!

I'm in such a huge dilema :(

Thank you!

Not sure of any software off the top of my head, but first things first, DO NOT USE THE DRIVE until youve scanned it.

just in case you missed that advice.

there are many progs but I would want that drive safely cloned and only accessed read only until I'd recovered the critical stuff.

I had a similar problem with a portable hard drive. Lost all the images when on safari. Oh we did laugh :bang:

When I got home my brother who is an IT technician suggested a few on line solutions and the one I finally went for was:

Ontrack - EasyRecovery www.ontrack.com

I tried the free checker and it worked a treat so bought a lincense.

Now have all my photos back.

Good luck and hope you get them back soon.

Hi All,

How long do these scans take?

I have run "SyncToy" to see if the files were hidden and tried copying. And it is copying all the files, and actually saying that it is taking up disk space... but when I open a folder it says there are 0 bytes in it, when the overall master folder is taking up 20 GB... and the transfer program is actually naming and showing it copying the individual files! This is REALLY weird :(

At least the data is there.

I suspect its been corrupted somehow and the data links to the images have gone. I'm no expert of course.

Data recovery software will probably work if this is the case, although if you can hear any strange noises (different from the ones your used to) then stop the hard drive straight away and look in to companies that will take the whole drive off you for repair/recovery.

My 40Gb drive took about 1hour 40minutes for a full recovery. The scan itself was much shorter.

The full recovery relocated the images and then copied them to a designated folder on my hard drive. You would usually be able to choose the files seperately or all at once. Some times you can only do batches of 10. It all depends on the software that you are using.

Take it to a local computer shop and pay them to do it - photos are often priceless and I wouldnt want to mess about and risk losing them for the sake of probably £50.

I can highly recommend "GetDataBack" - very good dos based program (can be run in windows). Takes it's time (7 hours for a 50gig HD) but it works extremely well and managed to get all my files back after 3 formats.

Uh, if anyone has a Canon laptop (I didn't know they made them?), make sure you back everything up before sending it in for repair

This guy didn't

Sorry, couldn't resist... hope everything's OK now.

before you go crazy... make sure you check your options in window explorer. Make sure that you have it set to show all files.

When you "copied" the pics from the EHDD, did you "Copy" them or "Move" them? I've hit the wrong option button before and been glad of the backups I keep!

Good luck with the data retrieval.

Hi All,

Just so you know, I have managed to find the files on a seperate backup. Thanks for all your help though :)
