photos from camera to pc help

Hey everyone,
I need some help with this, When i copy the photos from my slr to the laptop (copy and paste), once they are the laptop, then put my sd card back into the camera, the photos arent on the camera even though i copied and pasted them, where the pictures were on my camera it shows a box with a red cross?
Please help, what am i doing wrong?
also is there a way to put them back onto them back onto them sd card and replace them instead of the black boxes with the red cross?

Are you using a card reader or connecting the camera via a cable?

I'd first check that you are copying and not cutting, before pasting.

I use a card reader. Take the card from the camera and place it in the reader. Have two windows open in Windows Explorer, one for the reader and one for the destination folder and simply drag and drop.

Windows sees these as separate "drives" and so automatically copies rather than moving.

Your images are now on the PC and left on your memory card.

Have you got the software that came with your camera?
You will find it easier to transfer your photos using it.
It's personal preference whether you use a media reader or connect your camera via USB, I just connect the USB cable to my camera, the canon software launches automatically, one click of the mouse and my photos are transferred to a pre specified folder.

I take the Sd card out and slot it into the laptop. I'll have to find where my cd is that came with my camera. I am definitely copying and not cutting.

Not sure of the solution to your problem but if you download View NX2 from Nikon - free download - it includes Nikon Transfer.
That lets you copy pics from the card to 1 or 2 destinations (handy for backups) and at the same time you can rename the transferred files and add metadata, copyright data etc.
You can also select if you want it to ignore pics you have already downloaded or include them again, delete originals or leave them on the card etc.
