Just after a bit of advice really.
I have been approached by a Village council that are interested in using some images that I took at a local event - I am sure however that they think that I'll provide the images for free (I have in no way supported this notion btw) I was wondering how much people thought I should quote them for image usage for their website only & should I have a contract for this drawn up?
(Any suggestions as to how to word the email would be greatly appreciated too - I have one already written up but thought I'd see how others say "pay me, I need to eat" :lol:)

Hi Mike, I was looking at this last night as I'm not up to date. One commercial user of my images has declared himself bankrupt this week and has around 40 of my images online which have been up for around 4 years and has NEVER paid for their use. I am owed a heck of a lot of money as result, I should have gone legals on it a long time ago but it doesn't come naturally. Now he's bankrupt I doubt I'll see my money.
So, don't be shy about charging, especially as they are a public body with budgets etc.

Dod provided a great link for you there, but I guess this all depends on your circumstances. Are you a professional, or an amateur... experienced or not... etc.

If you want to expand your portfolio, and then you could use this site as a reference then you're not getting nothing out of the deal eh? However, on the other hand if the images are superb, and the organisation is benefiting from their use, then you should charge more.

My take on this personally is that you have been approached, and therefore I'd suggest you charge.

you should charge around £25 per image for website use and £30 - £40 for print use. Plus make sure they name you, that way new clients will look you up. Dont let them use them for free, they dont let you off for your council tax now do they.
By the way did you find out about those photo albums for me ?.

Dod, you are a star mate, cheers for the link, hadn't even thought of there (& it's always been in in my bookmarks too :bonk:) Client duly emailed, think they'll be too cheap to pay for the images but I'm decided that from now on I charge for my images :rules:

Right, I'm off to explore this newly discovered wonderful forum :lol:

That is a massive amount of difference from the guide prices on the NUJ Mark. I'm going to have to have a proper look into how much to charge.
I have not had time to talk to the guy about the albums sorry mate, will try to do so today & give you a shout :thumbs:

That seems quite cheap. What do you base this on? Personally I go to www.alamy.com and use their image finder to locate a similar image. Then I use their stock price calculator to get a quote and pass that to the client. That way I can say you'd get the same price at a stock library. Its better than the NUJ site too because it allows you to customize the license down to the last detail.

A guy i know Chris, shoots a lot of this type of stuff and he told me that he charges £75 per hour. Then £30 - £40 per image that the client uses, he say's if you charge to much they just wont pay. I charge £300 for half a day shoot and £500 for a full day, but Chris thinks his way is the best so i will give this a go. He gets a lot more of this type of work then i do. So i will give it a go this way and see what happens.

Interesting. I do it slightly differently. I charge a rate which is inclusive of a years license for 1 medium. So they could hire me for an afternoon shoot, £200 and that allows them to use as many shots as they want for 1 year in the UK in say a magazine, or their website. Thats at least the impression I got from reading Beyond the lens on how to do things. If its a model or something I do charge for prints after because its consumables. Your way does give me more money though :D
