not sure which category this fits into !

I've been asked to supply some photos to a Riding club that I am official photographer for in order for them to be projected onto large screen during their annual presentation evening next week.

Can anyone tell me what dpi/resolution etc I should supply them as I haven't a clue? Normally for web stuff etc I provide 72dpi and about 600 or 800 pixels on longest side.

I'm a bit reluctant to let them have full res images as I suspect they could be "passed around" electronically to others! the competitors do buy a lot from me durng the year but this could be a way of them getting them for free if I'm not careful!

How are they 'projecting'? Are they using a computer with an external monitor output to the projector? If so then the pictures will appear the same size as they would on a monitor. If that's full screen then I expect 1600x1200 would be suitable. If you're concerned about copies getting around then you could perhaps watermark them.

Ooo - I don't know what they are using, but will find out! I suspect it will be from a laptop so the 1600x1200 would be suitable. I had thought about a discreet watermark as well, just don't want it to be too intrusive!

Thanks!

Depending on what resolution projector they are using can you not just resize them to fit 1280 (for a 720p) or 1920 (for a 1080p) pixels wide? Obviously anything portrait would have to be either 720 or 1080 pixels high, that's assuming they are even using a HD projector

Not being silly but are you certain it's a digital projector and that they're not expecting a slide show?

Hi, i have queried it today and she's said they are using laptop so I'm assuming digital. When i get home i shall try & find out a bit more info but the person im liaising with isn't very techie minded!

If you're worried about the files being given away, I would be tempted to be there for the presentation to ensure that didn't happen. The fact that you mentioned it shows a certain amount of unease and if the potential sales would pay for the time "wasted" (take a load of business cards and a make it a sales opportunity?), show your face!

Oh i'll be there all evening taking photos of the presentations!!

business cards and flyers with special offers as well so hopefully some more sales should come my way :o)

I know them pretty well but i think it could be too tempting for someone to get their hands on the files if i don't restrict access somehow. They know the rules but certain people like to bend them 😄

if your worried about images being passed around you could use something like proshow gold / producer to create an executable slideshow that way all the images will be embeded into the single file exe which is double clicked to run ( like any other program )

the thing you would need to know is what resolution the laptop can project at or play it safe and produce a 800 x 600 slideshow

it would take somebody with a reasonable amount of knowledge to dissect the file to extract images and screen grabbing would produce poor results
as an added bonus you could layer any information within the slideshow you want it's an easy way to advertise :)

MAKE SURE YOU CHECK what resolution their projector runs at. It could easily be as low as 640 x 480 unless they've spent £££££ on it!

(At our camera club we use a Canon WUX4000. It has a native resolution of 1920 x 1200, similar to the types of figures others have bandied around here. But it costs £2500+!!)
