Hope this is the right place to put this...

I was about to place a subscription to Photoplus, when it all got a bit confusing.

In the Mag, there is a page that says subscribe for £10.99 by quarterly direct debit and get a Monopod as a welcome gift. Sure enough, on the web site, there it is at This Page.

A loose flyer insdie the mag gives the option of a 5-in-1 relfector, but now the subscription is £9.99 per quarter. HERE

Then, I looked under the 'photography' section HERE and it's £7.52!

Now you'll notice on the last link, it says "Subscribe to PhotoPlus and receive a FREE gift! Click here to see the current offer >"

Which takes you back to the page where it's back to £10.99!

Now if the monopod/reflector is free how come they all are charged at different rates? Surely if its free then it should cost the same either way.

Thoughts guys and girls?

I'd advise that if you are going to take out the subscription to get the freebie, ie. you wouldn't subscribe without the gift, then give them a call and do it by 'phone, that way you can make sure you will actually get the item you want and that you will get it within a reasonable time. I've been waiting six weeks for my freebie, the camera bag, have pestered them via phone calls and have been told it'll be another 6 weeks 'till the damn thing arrives. Tbh, I wish I hadn't bothered as I only considered the magazine a bonus rather than the other way round.

I subscribed in issue 1 and got nowt. Its quite good for kit reviews, but has to many much photoshop tutorials for my liking.
Generally though a good read.

hmm, ok thanks guys.

the email I got back today:
Thank you for your recent email.

Firstly please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Prices are set by the Publishers throughout the year. There are special offers available at various rates advertised both within the magazine and online. Some subscription promotions feature a discounted rate and others advertise at the standard rate or above but may also feature a gift.

I agree - I've been reading it for a few months and while it was good to start with, learning my camera, now that I know and understand a lot of the settings I find the magazine a bit "lite" on relevent detail and information.

I was also waiting for the lowepro bag, and got annoyed with being lied to about when it might arrive, so I've cancelled my subscription now!!!

I took out a subscription, mainly to get the bag
when it didn't turn up I rang
"run out of bags"
so they extended the subscription by 3 months
next day - bag arrives!

Well, they've succeeded putting me off, I'll go look elsewhere.

I subscribed at the end of July, first payment went out mid August, received bag before the end of August with an apology that it wasn't the one on the offer as they'd run out. It was replaced with a larger one:)

Just fired another snotty email to them. This is getting iritating now TBH. I'm looking at going abroad for a few days next month and need a bigger bag. I don't really want to go out and buy one from the shops so a straight answer to the effect of yes or no would be nice. Wouldn't be so bad if the magazine was half decent...

I subscribed for the Manfrotto monopad mainly. Haven't had the magazine yet (starts next issue) but the 'pod came in the post this morning.

thanks for the heads up what model is the monopod?

worth it for that alone i guess

It depends on how much you think a good camera support is worth....if you think £12 buys you a good monopod AND the postage for 3 monhts and a magazine, then you don't have a very high perception of value.

I think going out and buying a proper bag/monopod/reflector is probably better in th elong run - you will get the one that you want which suits your requirements, rather than the one you are given that they are using as bait.

here fishy fishy...........

have to agree with above comment. no such thing as a free gift. you're paying for it somewhere in the subscription. I rarely buy any mags now and just hunt for a good deal on the kit i want.

totaly disagree ive had some great freebies like teng tools for my motorbike

it says manfrotto cant be that bad surely

Well the bag I was supposed to receive is around 60 quid in Jessops so it would be a good deal if I actually received the damn thing.

Just 'phoned them as they haven't bothered answering my email and allegedly the bag is on the way, (so is Christmas.) I'll believe it when I see it.

What a cowboy outfit.

:bang:

The way these things work is that they hope you forget to cancel the direct debit and get you for the next year without giving you a 'gift'.

My subscription will cost £40 for the year and I get a £35 5 in 1 Reflector.

It will only cost me £5 for the year so long as I remember to cancel the direct debit after the third quarter.

I got my free Manfrotto monopod yesterday after waiting approx. 2 weeks, I'm happy.

For a years Subscription to Practical photography I got a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW. It worked out that each magazine cost £1. I still use that bag so it's been an absolute bargain for me as I would have bought the mag anyway.

just about to do it didnt realise its just for canon :bonk:

I subscribed on the 4th Aug and still nothing :-(

rang after 6 weeks and was told it would be reordered ..

waited another 4 weeks rang again to be told they don't have any bags but were expecting some in ..

even said the didn't have any in the first place when the mag went out!!

I ordered over the phone so the knew they didn't have any when they took the subscription so not impressed ...

I got my bag within 1 week of subscribing but not the one advertised as they had run out. However the bag they sent actually suits me better especially as it has a Tripod clip on the back. The magazine is basic but I will probably change mags once the repetition starts, it just suits me at the moment.

Got woken by the postie hammering at the front door at 7.30 this morning and, lo and behold, the elusive bag has arrived. It's the same one I was expecting as well. Took around 10 weeks, four phone calls and 2 emails to get here. Oh well, better late than never and the bag is just the job. :)

same for me bag arrived this mornig and its the correct one .. they must have got a new supply .. mine also took over 10 weeks with phone calls etc .. but great bag:-)

I subscribed at Focus and regretted it ever since. A really poor magazine in my opinion with limited interest, shockingly dull selection of (badly printed) photos and overall a very quick and lightweight read.

I'll stick to AP - there's stuff in that which blows your mind.

Cheers,
James
