I have recently discovered the joys of Photomatix, having downloaded the trial version and mucked around with a few images.

Question: are people editing the images first in Camera Raw (or whatever you preferred software is) and if so, what format are you saving the finished images under i.e. TIFF, JPEG etc before you send them over to Photomatix?

Hi Mark

I save mine as tiffs from CR,and Photomatix, they are massive files though, then convert to jpg for final save in CS5

I used to use Photomatix a lot and always saved as tiff. If you don't have the room on your hard disk then go for jpg you won't really notice for general purposes.

Hey Mark - I upload straight from raw to photomatix and save as tiff - then open and edit in CS5 and save as high quality jpeg (if you save as psd or tiff you'll likely end up with 40+MB files - huge!) :D

(love photomatix - great software!)

Okey dokey. That's cleared a few things up. But are you sharpening, adjusting levels etc in Camera Raw first before sending over to Photomatix?

Thanks all for the advice.

Depends Mark, if the image still needs a slight bit of exposure adjustment to get the correct dynamic exposure I would. But for the most part I did all the sharpening/adjustments after I generated the Photomatix image. Everyone has there own work flow though, just need to find yours ;)

Yep, I'm the same as Jamie - I do the sharpening afterwards.

Depends tho I guess - if you are just using one image in photomatix, perhaps you could sharpen before (I haven't tried doing the before)...

but if you are doing a (what they call) true HDR with multiple images at varying exposure / bracketed... unless you've been using a tripod and have absolutely no movement at all - sometimes photomatix does not align the images completely so when you produce the photomatix image it looks as tho it's slightly blurry... this can be reduced with sharpening in CS5 (but I reckon if you sharpen before it would be more noticeable)

<does that makes sense> :cuckoo:

I've only been using this software for a couple months so that has been my experience so far. Someone may come along with heaps better advice. ;)

I've tried blending 2 & 3 images together with no problem at all. Very impressed with the results actually. Sounds like the best way is to use Photomatix first and then make your edits afterwards in CS5 etc.

Cheers.

I usually work from the raw letting PM do the conversion, sharpening is done later in the processing in photoshop for me.

Thanks Wayne. That's precisely what I have been doing all lunchtime! Very impressive bit of software I must say. I've tried to keep my images as natural looking as possible without creeping into that overdone HDR look.

Yes I argree, I have a preset made to get me close to the look I like with my bracket (+- 2 stops) I then tweek it from there. Then I go to PS for the final ajustments.

My workflow is RAW opened into PhotoM export as TIFF into PS for final tweaking and saved as JPG.

Might suit other and others might hate it but it's all good - Am actually thinking of changing to just using JPG's into PM as I haven't noticed as difference in the final images between original RAW files or JPG's into PM at the start.
