photomatix file format in PS

I made an HDR image, saved it as an hdr file but then when I opened it in photoshop cs4 it looked completely different and had none of the HDr processing.

How do I use photomatix and make an image I can actually do something with?
 
You need to tonemap the image, in photoshop open the image then go to image/mode 8 or 16 bit, then you'll get the tonemapping options.
In photomatix you can just click the tonemapping option directly and ajust from there.
 
Hmmm,

when I press tone mapping in photoshop though it turns it from a really cool image to one that doesn't look as good, whats the deal there?
 
Which option did you choose? Photoshop isn't actually that great at HDR, it does need a fair bit of work and fiddling to get a good image out if it
 
ahh i have it now, adjusting the settings in the tone mapping in photomatix makes the HDR, the first step is kind of like a preview.
