I have been thinking about camera insurance for a while now. Basically because it would be game over if something happened to my gear, tis an expensive hobby!

Right then, Photoguard seems to be quite popular, some love it, some hate it. I have had a quote for approx £2k's worth of gear at about £10 a month. Their "pro" cover apparently covers you against accidental damage (i think)? How true is this?

I'm purely amature at the mo btw and accidental damage cover is what I really want.

Its cheap so do it OR dont touch them with a barge pole?

I know a lot of people are covered by home insurance but I still live with parents! I'm never moving out!

I've heard some good, and some bad, but I guess it's like anything else, people wont always have the same experiance.

I'm going to be going with them this week, gunna sort it out tomorrow, as my insurance with E&L has expired and i've been told to avoid them like the plague.

I also live with parents, but have taken out my own Marks & Spencers contents insurance. It's about £20 a month as I've also got away from home cover. I originally took it out for my bikes, but it covers all my stuff now too. Obviously cheaper if you don't want away from home cover. May not be appropriate solely for your camera gear as fairly high premium but thought I'd mention them as recommended

Its accidental damage that I am really looking for but dont know if any companies offer this?

i am with photoguard, and have been for about 14 months now.

They allegedly offer damage cover but so far I havent had to claim so who knows what really happens.

They also do in car cover, but they have some clarifying rules for that,

Eg, the camera gear must be in a hard case for cover while in a car

also for the theft part of the cover, the camera has to be in the boot (fair enough) and if the car is a hatchback, the car must have a steering wheel lock (that one is a bit strange - wil the thief think, oo that car has a steering lock so I wont be able to get into the boot)

One thing to note about photoguard, if you happen to hire or borrow any extra gear, they won't let you add it on for a day, if you add extra gear it has to on the policy for the whole year and therefore you have to pay for the whole year on it. But that said, I added a dynax 7d onto my policy and it only added an extra £13

Can you guys give me likes to your insurance companies, getting alot of kit now so need to get it covered for when out and about.

I've had nothing but good experiences with photoguard so far
been with them about 14 months. claimed twice.
2k of gear and about £70 per year.
banged my compact whilst out at dinner. the lens died and they replaced it.
Just got my canon 1.4 50mm back today
I dropped it whilst in my camera bag....the lens refused to focus.
filled in some basic forms, then they needed the lens.
so I sent that off (my expense) and about 10 days later
the only problem was that I'd budgeted £220 and they could only find it for £238 so I'd have to pay the excess.
However, one stop deliver with fed ex for £204.
So I bought that, the cheque arrived 3 days ago. The lens arrived this morning.
I think they were very accomodating to be honest and I'm a happy owner of a 50mm f1.4 again which I find very helpful.

I agree with Dizmat, I've been with Photoguard for a few years now, and only once I had to claim, after I dropped my 10D into a river, and the shutter seized up, they paid out no questions.

Agree about avoiding E&L, had my fingers burnt once with them , they wouldn't cover the 'boot' of a hatchback unless it was locked from inside, so as probably 80% of hatchbacks fall into this category (i.e. can't lock the 'boot' from the inside), most togs would be excluded from a claim if they had gear stolen from their car.

Fortunately, photoguard covers this eventuality.

Please let the Photoguard feedback be positive. I've set up with them recently after a total nightmare experience using Barclays home insurance, who are the biggest shower of ***** on god's green earth....

I have to say that my experience of Photoguard has been good they paid out on the standard cover when I dropped it (it includes accidental damage) - see the reviews section.

As with all insurance policies there is small print - read it and understand it and you'll be OK. The main bits AFAIK are
1) Don't leave your kit unattended in a public (or semi public) place e.g. under your desk at work (to be fair if you do you are almost asking for your stuff to get stolen) and
2) In Car cover doesn't cover you past 21:00 or if you have left the items in plain sight (but it does cover in the boot of any car incuding hatchbacks and estates provided the load cover is in place).

Very surprised...I had a bicycle stolen whilst locked and they were absolutely superb...was this nightmare connected to photographic equipment?

Cheers, Mark

So these people with Photoguard cover, have you taken the regular policy out or the "pro" cover?

ok so in conclusion it seems they are ok when it comes to claiming £200.
When someone steals £3k of your stuff then it's a different matter.
Don't say I didn't warn you.

I might sound bitter and that's because I am!
It's no fun paying off a £3k loan for something some scum bag now has his hands on

try glover and howe, i'm failry impressed with them but i haven't had a claim yet....

Hmmn, I'm with Photoguard and I guess I should have read the small print as I put down the replacement price that I might be able to get if I shopped around myself. Reading your post it seems they decide who provides the replacement and sound like my figures may be too low. Not that I need anything replaced at the mo'
