Anyone else use Photoguard to insure their equipment? I'm insured for up to £950 of gear, hire equipment also covered, public liability up to £1million, personal accident up to £10,000..

All for £54 for the year.

I use them, however it costs me a tad more than you.... :(

Well I don't have that much kit, although I'll be adding a 55-200mm lens to my bag in the next 2-3 weeks!
x

I use them, £78 a year for me. Which will go up soon as I don't have the D70 anymore which has been replaced by a D200.

I am with photoguard. I am currently paying monthly. I think I am paying about £35 a month at the moment, though I am wondering if I should keep my lights on there as they don't travel that much. I can't remember off the top of my head what I am covered for, but I have their pro cover.

All my camera gear is covered on my house contents insurance - worldwide cover for up to £2500 worth of equipment including theft from car (as long as it was stolen from the boot or glove box) for £30 extra on the policy :D

Did you notice anything go missing on Sunday ;)

I use them. My gear is insured for over £6,000 with personal & public liability. Just renewed it again and cost £211.79.

My gear is covered to a certain degree with house contents insurance, but I needed the peace of mind when out photographing weddings and events. My friend who is with Photoguard, dropped her 20D with the 70-200mm 2.8 IS attached on the London underground platform. Not a pretty site (sob). Photoguard replaced the lens and camera within a week.

I hope I never have to test it!

Well that is the thing. If you don't have clients, and deadlines to worry about, then you don't need this level of cover, but you can't tell a client that the shoot they had booked for two months had to be changed cause your camera was stolen or damaged. And if you don't have to worry about the equipment when you shooting, you get better pictures.

Just got covered from them too (have a wedding to shoot in 2 weeks) so just in case.....

£3.40 a month to cover all my gear, bargain for the cost of a MacDonald's.

I'm insured with them,I can't remember what I pay but haven't yet added the 3 new lenses I bought recently which is going to increase it drasticly.:(

....Ummm! that's what happened to me - I added my 5D with 24-105mm Lens and the premium shot up.

Wouldn't be comfortable with no insurance though.

Well that wasn't so painful it's now costing nearly £13.00 a month for all my kit, I was quite suprised the new lenses & flash only cost an extra £8.70 and worth every penny

I've been debating what to do about insurance and must admit due to a previous insurer wriggling out of paying for replacement locks (as they claimed they weren't liable for locks on a communal door even though we specifically stated the property had it's own front door plus a communal one...yes I know..if it's not on the schedule then tell 'em!) I'm a little sceptical of companies claiming they'll cover expensive items of camera kit as well as a company like photoguard. I've done a quick quote and it came back with £196 for a year including £1 million personal liabilty and in vehicle cover. Works out the same as we were paying for Sky (which we got so bored of we never watched)so it's not like we'll even miss the money.. iyswim.

Does anyone have any experience of claiming on household insurance for more expensive items like £1k+ lenses etc.

Also, as I own a 20D, if the policy states new for old would that mean a 30D or whatever replaces that as a replacement or just a cheque for an amount decided by them as how much a "new" 20D should cost based on their final selling price before everyone ran out of stock?

The problem I see with putting it on household insurance is the increase in premium if you claim, and the excess

Yup - also use photoguard - glad to hear of somebody easily claiming as it puts my mind at ease if i ever do need to claim.

Anyone know if you need to notify them if you take your gear worldwide? on the 30 day worldwide policy

Funny that I also use Cycleguard (same company, different department) to insure my bike. For £1400 cover for my bike last year it cost £10 a month, where £1800 camera gear is £3.40 a month. This year I only insure the bike for £700 (depreciation sucks) and it is STILL £5 a month, 30% more than my camera gear. It's a bargain really.

I use Photoguard, thought I'd better get insurance before I trudged my camera up in the mountains of Austria. Pretty sure it cost less than £40.00 including in car cover but my kit is not as good as most on here.

They must have a lot of different arms this company as I also insure my violins through the Pavilion side of it.

Thought I might have got a discount for insuring two different types of items through them but they seem to deal with everything totally separately.

When you finish "buying" the insurance there is a pop up box asking about feedbacks, one of the questions is how would you like to be rewarded and you get a few options, one is discount on other insurance with them...I ticked "receive a cheque"

Flippeng heck, must have missed that one.

Will look more closely next time I renew.

I use them, never had to claim though. It's about £87 for the contents of my sig plus a few more <£100 things (memory cards and whatnot), which altogether are worth about £1400-£1500 or so. That's EU and 30 days worldwide cover, plus in-car cover.

Happy with the price and from what I've heard they're not assholish about claims, so it's all good :)

OK, just got quoted, and will probably take it, as my equipment is on household, but I feel specialist cover is probably better and as already mentioned, anyproblems wont affect the house premiums.
So, £95 for a d70s and D200, 2 sigma and 1 nikon lens and miscellaneous accessories [cards, remotes, cheap tripod], with no excess, EU and 30 day world wide, and personal accident. I used the RRP for values of equipment [or current equivalnets], not the current best prices, so I could probably get a cheaper quote but figured for insurance purposes, RRP is best?

One thing I didnt add in was in vehicle cover, because the T&C's say only covered if carried in rigid box - now I dont know about everyone else, but I don't generally lug my kit around in a rigid box....anyone had any experience of claiming for this and know how flexible they are?

Am I the only person who considers a £75 repair bill to be relatively expensive?

It is my fault for not having read the small print carefully enough, but it seems they will not pay for repairs worth less than £100. Which pretty much rules out any damage to a Sigma 'consumer' lens (in this case the 17-70mm) with the above being the standard tariff for them.

Yet despite my claim including a quote, they still had me go to the expense of sending it to them, just so they could return it and state that it is not covered. What was the point of that?

As I say it is partly my fault for not reading the policy carefully enough, but that does not excuse all the messing around on their behalf. It took a few weeks after making the claim for them to ask for the lens, and then a few more weeks for them to reply back. They could have just responded immediately to the claim to say it was not covered.

I know insurance companies are supposed to be slow, but given the praise for them online I am pretty unimpressed with their response.

Do other insurers have the same high exclusion on repair costs? I think I am within 28 days of renewing so might have time to cancel and go elsewhere.

Michael.

I just enquired about this particular point and the response indicated that they would insure regardless of what case the equipment was stored in:

"Thank you for your email.

Providing the equipment is kept in the boot area of the car or the van with the factory fitted <cover> in place covering the items we would insure the items for you.

I hope this clarifies, however if we can assist any further then please contact us on 02476 851000,"

i am going to sweden late next year to you know if cold weather and extremes of temperature would be covered
