Hi there, first of all, im a bit of a noob so go easy

Im currently making up a photo studio in my spare room. Got a white backdrop for it.

My head is ram packed of ideas about what to do with lighting, and thats the problem, ive been thinking about it too much

Now I'm thinking of getting one, maybe two flashes with umbrellas and then one softbox to get a nice soft flash into the picture

Obviously additional to that would be reflectors ect ect

There are too many possibilities out there

I mean, can i buy a flash, and if i can, which one, and then quite easily make a softbox or get a white brolly and mod that. Im good at making and fabricating things, its more the actual flashes and how to trigger them I'm having problems with getting my head round it all.

If anybody could help me and point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated

At the moment i have some twin site lights that builders use but got a feeling they will be rejected out the studio soon

I started with Elinchrom D-lites.
Have a look at http://www.theflashcentre.com/
I don't know about 400D, but check if its got a pc sync connector. If not, you'll need some wireless method. I use skyport.
The Flash Centre also run studio lighting courses.
 
have a look in teh classified sectrion for a gent called flash in the pan.

he sell radio triggers cheap, and dependiong on the flash and camera they should work

also look up Zak Arias, or Joe mcnally on the Youtube, and chack out there blogs for load of useful info

The ideal setup would be.. 3 light setup..
2 lighting the background and 1 for the subject/model...

Most kits these days come with umbrellas or softboxes..

Loads of good makes.. Lastolite/lencarta/elinchrom etc...

Most kits come with pc sync cords which you can buy an adaptor to fit in your hotshoe to trigger them or purchase a radio trigger set...

Without lying, some of this is abit little alien to me

Photodiva - I do believe the 400D does have the pc sync thing on it

Could anybody suggest any actual links of good value umbrellas/softboxes atall?

Im from th UK by the way
 
You should definately look at Lencarta if it's studio lighting (as opposed to hotshoe flashes) that interests you.

All Lencarta kits include a radio trigger, so you wouldn't need to worry about the lack of a synch socket on your camera - and anyway, radio triggers are much better all round.

Take a look at the free tutorials on the Lencarta website, they may help.
 
Ive got a 400D and I cant find a sync port on it - I use a radio trigger.
Ive just taken delivery of 3 x 250w flash heads, stands, umbrellas, softboxs, backdrops, barndoors, gels, radio triggers and all sorts of goodies!

Welcome to TP :)

First thing you need to do is decide on your budget. Then you need to choose between mains powered studio flash, or hot-shoe guns.

I don't think your 400D has a pc socket but that's not a problem. Either get a hot-shoe adapter for a tenner, or if you use radio triggers you won't need one anyway.
