Hi Guys,

What software do you use to edit photos? Are there any free downloads out there or is it a case of you get what you pay for?

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Free: Paint.Net - very good as a freebie. PhotoFiltre is also very well thought of although I don't use it.

Most of my work is done in Lightroom 3 - currently £95 from Amazon and a great bargain at that price. Photoshop Elements 10 is around the £50 mark and again a very good option.

I use Gimp, free software that kind of is a photoshop copy but for free. Suits me for what I need as I tend not to do much if any PP.

What is your camera?

If you have a Nikon, View NX2 is very good and free. It's either on the CD that came with your camera or a free download from Nikon's website.

There's a really useful sticky at the top of the Post Processing forum.

Personally I use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (£200) for most of my editing and photo management and Adobe Photoshop Elements (£50) for more advanced editing.

We have Photoshop CS5 because I can do my photo editing and the wife can utilise the plethora of design features for her craft/card making stuff.
We upgraded from CS4 which was expensive but worth it on the basis we both get our monies worth.

I have just got a copy of DPP of a kind forum member.

Its great for editing, very easy to use.

If you dont have it and want a copy then just drop me a PM and i will post you a copy.

I've been using PhotoPlus editing programs for years and they do almost everything I want.

And if you register you can get great offers when they get replaced by newer versions.

As an example I'm still using PhotoPlus X2 which I got at £12.00 with an A5 manual as well!

Or you can try Photoscape a good FREE editing program with a lot of features and very easy to use.

Or simply Google "Free photo editing programs" and try them all - there's an awful lot of good free stuff out there.

.

I've been working with Adobe Photoshop CS4 for a couple of years. Recommend it!

The Canon software and Elements, but I don't do a huge amount of processing, I try to get the shot I'm after in Camera.

I use Lightroom for managing and manipulating photographs and Elements for more advanced editing. Most photographers do not need the full graphics facilities of CS3/4. I have dabbled with the packages which come with cameras, Nikon, Canon, Olympus and Sony, and with the packages which came with printers, Epson, Canon and HP but have not found them to be anywhere near as good as Lightroom / Elements.

I use google Picassa for most stuff, not that powerful but quick and easy.

I use Photoshop or Gimp for stuff that needs more grunt.

Picasa is free, and not bad. Canon DPP is good. Photoshop Elements is an excellent buy, and all many people actually need. It's a good primer for the full version of Photoshop too. Gimp has a lot of the Photoshop functionality, but has quite a steep learning curve. Photoshop is probably the gold standard, but could easily be overkill for many people. Lightroom gets excellent reports, but I've never used it and can't comment.

It really depends what you want to do, and how much you're willing to spend. I'd probably recommend DPP and Photoshop Elements if I had to.
