Yes
I have been sent TWO trade visitor passes to the photography show. Each has a different number so it's not just a duplicate. I'm considering letting a mate use one to enter for free. What are your thoughts - Good idea/bad idea?

If the person your thinking of giving it to would benefit and thus the show would benefit then your probably doing them a favour finding them interested parties..

If your passing it to a tramp in the street then probably no

:)

It would be to someone who was going anyway and is interested in photography, I just wondered whether it would be flagged up as two of me there.

Bad idea. We invest a lot into providing additional perks for our professional visitors (lounge, welcome tea/coffee, happy hour, showguide etc) and if it gets abused in this fashion then we would have to reconsider which would be a real shame. £13.95 (£10.95 if you look for the discount codes from exhibitors) is excellent value when you look at the amount of free education is laid on across the stages, adobe theatre etc.

There is also the health and safety aspect too and while it would be difficult to pick up on site our post show audit would highlight the same name from the same address and it would flag as an issue when you booked for next year.

Thanks. I thought this would be the case, just wanted to check.

As a general point, I will pay to enter a show where the exhibitors are attending for free or even being paid to appear, such as a model railway exhibition or an air show but will not pay for entrance to a show where the exhibitors are also paying to attend, in the hope of selling me something.

I do know of at least two shows which moved to charging for entrance from free entrance and subsequently disappeared as a result of the drop in footfall, which was a pity because they were good shows and I think the exhibitors did profitable business through them.

If your systems were any good they would pick up the double registration pre show, always better to bolt the stable door before the horse is gone

Hi Sejanus

The majority of indoor exhibition style events such as the Gadget Show Live, Ideal Home Show, Grand Designs Live etc all charge both but the costs to exhibit at a consumer show (where visitors normally pay) are much less than at a trade show (where visitors are normally free) so it is about getting the balance right so it works for all concerned. I expect the shows you mentioned could not make them work commercially by allowing free entrance - exhibitions are expensive to run with the costs of the venue, building the stages, laying 25,000m of carpet, registration costs etc etc etc - which is why they disappeared.

Worth noting that not all the Photography Show exhibitors want to sell to you at that point in time. All the major manufacturers are keen for you to try their kit (in the hope of you buying at some point in the future of course) with only the retailers able to take your money there and then.

Hope that helps.

Jonny

Hi Mike

That would be the ideal situation but it only takes a minor difference (i.e. Michael Weeks or Mike Weeks or a gap in a postcode) for it not to be flagged right away. With 30,000+ registration records each year there will always be a couple.

Gap in a postcode, not an issue, takes seconds to write that code to remove spaces, different or similar names from one address totally expected, even the same first name as often done in some cultures to name first born after the father. If you cant detect it in advance then little chance of detecting it post event. Just saying

I'll have to bow to your superior knowledge of visitor registration software on this one Mike :-)

Just for information here, I did not register twice. I was simply sent two passes. :S

Did you get billed for 2 or slightly more than you would have for just 1?

I registered as a trade visitor the once, and have been sent two passes. Hasn't cost me at all.

I'll rise to this one. Back in the 1980s I was one of the few specialist writers of name and address recognition, correction and deduplication software (on mainframes) so I have more than dabbled in the topic - it was a full time job for many years. On the basis of that specialised knowledge and experience, I have no difficulty in seeing that duplicates could be picked up post registration that wouldn't be spotted at the time.

I'll offer another view.

Why post it here? Just use it and accept it as a freebie that will probably never happen again.
