Photography Road Trip idea

Am I crazy or is this a good idea for a photography road trip? So my idea is to drive from the Midlands, catch the ferry to Holland to photograph the flower fields and windmills etc and then drive the reverse trip, over the space of a couple of days? Is this a crazy idea or would others consider it, was thinking that if you did it and could entice a couple of others along for the fun, it could actually be a realtivly low cost couple of days

Yes I could fly, but then I'd have to hire a car, plus car would mean I luggage wouldn't be a worry etc...
 
Sounds good to me. I recently done up the east coast, along the top of Scotland, then down to Ullapool stopping what seemed like every 200 yards for photos, then took the caravan to Ullapool for another week just to do around the area
Absolutely loved it, as I'm sure you,ll love the flowers and windmills
Even the occassional tuts from my darling passenger didn't put a damper on things :D

The only issue could be a car full of photographers could mean lots of stops to take photos :P
 
I think three in a normal car would be the limit, but some folk like it snug I suppose
I remember having the back seat of a Passat to myself going through Germany France Holland amd Luxembourg many moons ago, no camera, lots of beer and bad living but happy memories. Even getting clamped in Amsterdam brings a smile now
Still remember the sense of adventure and further makes me want to shout at you "go for it"

I drive a large car so 3 would be very comfortable, 4 would still be comfortable with more than enough room for 8 bags assuming it's a 2/3 days trip that's a carry one sized bag for clothes etc and large camera bag each :Lord with room for any extra kit etc
 
I'm seriously considering cashing in my car for a small camper van for exactly these kind of trips.

Well it was when I discovered that I could book the ferry for car plus 4 adults for just £111 each way :lol: suddenly an idea started to form as they say :lol: when I'm thin enough I may well buy a camper for such a purpose too
 
I would be up for this Matt, if it was during school half terms/ holidays.

That's good to hear, occurs to me I'll have to renew my passport if an went this comes to fruition :thumbs:
 
Last year I did three such trips.
1. Scotland
2. Down to the south coast across to Devon and Cornwall up to Somerset and back to Midlands
3. Ferry from Portsmouth to Santander across Spain to Benidorm (to see my sister for a coupe of days) then up through France and back.

One majour reason the last trip was best was that I had a gps gizmo on my camera to remind me of where the photos were taken.
 
go for it - i did scotland wild camping the other year 1st time but loved it...
 
I've done a few trips, some abroad, some in the uk. Love the Pembrokeshire Coast, following coast roads and getting out to walk in the different bays. I've travelled through the us, Asia and France doing similar.
Don't take main roads, motorways etc, take the smaller a roads to your destination and you'll see much more. Yes it'll take longer but the journey becomes a major part of the trip and you'll find some interesting parts to photograph.

This year we're going from San Francisco to Vegas over two weeks, with rough plans to go via some of the national parks and Death Valley. Should be fun.

Take good maps, don't rely on sat nav. Do a little investigation before you go as there may be some stunning areas just slightly off route.
 
I'd be up for it but it would be a road trip in itself to get to you lol. Funds probably won't allow just yet anyway. Currently building up a 5Diii or 6D budget :D Although it's taking longer than I thought because there's no packages with the wide angle lens I want when I go FF, so I'm saving for both at the same time. Next year though I'd be up for a trip somewhere.

I was even thinking about getting a VW transporter and kitting out the back as a camper. I did it to one I had before and was great with an awning on the side for the kids. Shouldn't have sold it.

I did a road trip 18 months ago. Sail to le havre, stopped in Giverny, Chablis, Annecy, 5 nights on lake geneva, then into switzerland - Murren, lucerne, then back through france, alsace, etc champagne before heading home via calais.

My tips:-
  • Stay a minimum of 2 mights everywhere, one night is not enough.
  • Stay out of the cities, just my preference for a driving holiday. But if i did choose to stay in a city, be very selective about your location. get somewhere on a good public transport route, in a good area.
  • Limit travel to maximum of 100 miles between overnight stops (apart from the first and last days).
  • Pack light! Use clothes that can be washed and dried quickly in a shower and that don't need ironing. This can make a vast difference to the amount you have to bring.
  • I always read up on places i was visiting, but i have since found i quite like discovering as i go. We stopped in Versailles as we sw the signs on the autoroute. Walking up the steps from the car park, not expecting anything and coming across the view over the orangery and the lake towards the Bernini statue will live with me forever.
  • )On the other hand (!) Tripadvisor is brilliant for finding good restaurants. When we were tired and just went to the closest decent looking restaurant, rather than finding somewhere with good reviews on trip advisor, it was almost universally bad / very average. Perhaps we had bad luck, but restaurants is one area i would research.

Well I'm thinking about next year anyway to be honest anyway so if this goes ahead one there will be a lot of notice, and two of you did go for it, there's plenty of parking space on my driveway :P

These two points. Pack light is great but check the use of the hotel laundry. Sometimes it's really cheap and comes back overnight, so you get nice clean pressed clothes back in the morning.
 
Having lived in Holland I think it's a great idea... The drive up to Lisse (where you find the Tulips and keukenhof) is gifted with lots of photographic opportunities.

The Dunes north of Duinjkerque
Bruges
Gent, the landscape to the coast features long tree-lined avenues (to keep the Germans in the shade)
Schelde - over the Delta Works
Middleburg in Zeeland
Rotterdam
The Hague
Leiden
Lisse and Haarlem

On the way back
Den Bosch
Antwerp
Doel - if anything remains of it

No need to go into Keukenhof and fighting the Japanese invasion - rent a bike and you can cycle around Lisse, colours are as remarkable as they are in Keukenhof but less 'cultivated'.

Having moved back to the UK in 2009 I do miss the area.
